If violated, offer a hundred confessions. Thus, regarding the order of permission and prohibition, through the power of merit, with the two—capable intention and action—examining very wisely, thereby grasping the qualities of the five paths in the palm of one's hand. Temporarily enjoying the glory of higher realms, and ultimately attaining definite goodness, one will experience many obstacles. Specifically, it is like this: By completely serving the precious guru with a great accumulation of merit, residing near the guru, at that time, through extensively practicing accumulation of learning and contemplation, it is the path of accumulation. Like tasting the nectar of the spoken words as taught, forcibly applying oneself to non-conceptual wisdom, it is the path of preparation. The nature of reality, which is nothing at all, the great definitive truth that is difficult to see with any example, directly shown through methods of pacification and so forth, it is the path of seeing. Regarding its nature, whether meditating or not meditating, completely cutting off the obstacles and deviations that fall into the two extremes, thereby knowing the non-separating, all-pervading, naturally occurring meditation, it is the path of meditation. By measuring the intention with the four great assurances, thereby reaching the ultimate discipline, attaining the self-ground of no-meditation, it is the path of no-more-learning. As it is said in the tantra: After completely serving the guru, residing near the precious one, this is called the path of accumulation. The precious guru explains the meaning, and integrates the two instructions into the continuum, I declare this to be the path of preparation. Through the four modes of introduction, seeing the definitive truth in this life, I declare this to be the path of seeing. The meditation of no-meditation, and the two—meditation and no-meditation, abiding in a state of non-separation, I declare this to be the path of meditation. The intention of the Buddha, with the four great assurances, thoroughly understanding the state of non-abiding, I declare this to be the ultimate path. Thus it is said. Therefore, the attainment of the state of omniscient knowledge arises entirely from the precious guru. Bodhisattvas always rely on the superior individual and the superior Dharma. The great teacher Nagarjuna showed great reverence to the great Brahmin Saraha, and thus attained liberation in one session. Atisha, in order to request bodhicitta from Guru Serlingpa, endured immeasurable hardships in the vast ocean. Naropa, Jetsun Shyepa Dorje to Marpa

When relying on a master, one should endure hardships, obey whatever is said, offer whatever one has to the master, and know how to transform whatever arises into devotion. One who possesses such a mind is skilled at receiving the master's instructions, gains warmth in experience, and possesses great blessings and power. Realization is also supremely high. In this present (815) time, this Kuntuzangpo (Samantabhadra) is the master, so we are fortunate. Now, without being startled like a wild yak, rely on the master with great reverence, strive to obtain profound instructions, and repeatedly think, 'May I not do anything that goes against the master's mind.' When this arises in the mindstream, the master's blessings enter, and first, one turns away from samsara. Second, the sight of wisdom opens. Third, innate thoughts arise, and all phenomena of names and knowledge become self-liberated. One is liberated from the attachments of ultimate wisdom. The way to rely on the master that was just described is primarily for beginners. During the actual practice, one should please the master with the offering of practice, one of the three ways to please the master, as stated in the 'Collection of Eight Teachings': 'The methods for pleasing the master in this way have special distinctions. Diligently practice enlightenment, in order to fulfill (816) the instructions. Offer vows for one month, six months, and twelve months, as well as one year, six years, and twelve years. Likewise, serve the master, and whatever benefits sentient beings, engage in activities that accord with the scriptures, and protect and cleanse the three aspects of the Buddha's teachings. Do as instructed, abandoning the thought of not doing it, and without doubt, accomplish it. Then, whatever you wish will be accomplished without hindrance.' Therefore, the teachings that have been received should be filled in the mind through hearing, determined through contemplation, and applied to the mindstream through meditation. One should establish them through the three wisdoms and reach the state of accomplished mastery. Even so, beginners cannot actually practice these things, so they should be made the object of aspiration. Those who are able to practice should take them up according to the place, time, and circumstances. This method is explained in the (817) Sutra of the Arrayed Tree and the Vajrapani Abhisheka Tantra.
