The refuge of cause. Taking refuge in order to obtain these three jewels in one's own mindstream in the future is the refuge of result, so it is named from the perspective of the object of focus. Consider all the male and female lineages of wisdom protectors to be present in that rainbow-like cloud mass, like stars appearing in the expanse of the sky, and make that the path of aspiration. Or, during the maturing empowerment, remember the purity of how one takes refuge in the outer, inner, and secret aspects, each in their respective realms. Fifth, in what manner does one take refuge? That is, although these fields of merit appear in various different forms, in reality they are the wisdom play of the three roots, the unceasing body is the Sangha, the speech is the Dharma, and the mind is the Buddha, all gathered as a whole. As it says in the Glorious Guhyasamaja Tantra: "The stainless mind becomes the Buddha, The Dharma is also the pure and true speech, The body is called the Sangha." Know this from that. Also, take refuge by thoroughly establishing it in your mind with the attitude of elevating, diminishing, and knowing. Sixth, for what purpose? Not just for oneself to attain peace and happiness, but in order to establish all sentient beings, as vast as the sky, in the state of liberation and omniscience, generate the intention yourself, and contemplate all sentient beings reciting it with one voice. With palms joined at the heart in the manner of uniting samsara and nirvana, take refuge by reciting the five lines of: "Om Ah Namo Hum (藏文:ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿ་ན་མོ་ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:ओँ आः नमो हुं,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ āḥ namo hūṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡啊 纳摩 吽) All refuge places abiding in the ten directions and three times, be mindful!" Although it is explained elsewhere that one should gather the refuge object into oneself at the end, here, for the time being, we are requesting the field of merit to remain until the seven-limbed practice. Seventh, the object to be purified and the means of purification for such refuge are: In general, all impure self-appearances, and in particular, the object to be purified, the worldly rulers, the gods of the tirthikas such as Brahma and Ishvara, and the gods, nagas, demons, tsen, powerful ones, and so on, who are not suitable objects of refuge, yet one has taken refuge in them, and the objects suitable for refuge, such as the lama and the Three Jewels, yet one has acted disrespectfully towards them, and so on, all such mental appearances and habitual tendencies are the object to be purified. To practice these properly is the path of purification, and to practice these two without separation is the nature of reality.

Be certain of refuge in the Vajra Vehicle. In the Guhyasamaja Tantra, it says, "The nature of the Three Jewels is bodhicitta." As it is said, the illusory wheel or function of the mind of the yogi who takes refuge is the very nature of the mind itself. After its essence is established as inseparable clarity and emptiness, without wavering from the state where nothing whatsoever is established in its own nature, the unceasing radiance (107) appears as the object of refuge, the master of refuge, and the manner of taking refuge, and is practiced as union. As it says in the Uttaratantra, "Uncreated and spontaneously accomplished." As it is said, everything is gathered into the expanse of one's own awareness alone, and by training through the door of faith as the path, what will become manifest? The benefits of such refuge are beyond comprehension. As the scripture says, "If this refuge had form, even this sky would be too small to contain it. The great ocean, a treasure of water, cannot be measured by a scoop." As it is said, this is only the foundation stone of the path, so if it is not pure, not only will it lead to mistakes, but one will not even be included among the inner Buddhists, so it should be emphasized. Second, there are three aspects to generating bodhicitta: cultivating motivation, actual generation of bodhicitta, and purifying the basis, the means of purification, and the essence of purification. The first is: In the Compendium, it says, "Whoever desires to definitely arise in this Buddha Vehicle, should tame all sentient beings with equanimity, with the perception of parents, with a mind of benefit and a mind of love, without deception and being upright, should speak gentle words." As it is said, it is impossible for all sentient beings equal to space not to have been my parents. As it says in the Letter to a Friend, "If the amount of mother's milk were collected, it would be like Mount Sumeru; if it were made into a ball, the earth could not hold it." As it is said, parents are made in turn, and like the parents of the present, they are benefactors who have given great kindness, but without understanding such a principle, because the antidote is weak, the number of times one has killed one's parents is countless. There is no action that has not been done or experienced. Now that we understand such a key point, why not cultivate the special (108) bodhicitta when we encounter the profound path of the Great Vehicle? Therefore, my parents are tormented by the endless ocean of samsaric suffering, and I cultivate from the depths of my heart, thinking, "How pitiful!"
