If a thought arises, it is distraction. Distraction is co-emergent ignorance. At that time, where is the freedom not to follow it? Therefore, non-distraction is the nature of mindfulness. If a thought arises from mindfulness itself, that thought is a sudden manifestation of skill, and mindfulness cannot tolerate it, so it naturally subsides. Such subsidence is not the power of a new mindfulness; a single mindfulness does not have both good and bad. However, for those who cling to nominalistic substantiality, when the non-distracted non-thought disappears, the contemplation that is cultivated through intellectual analysis is insight. When a thought arises, distraction clings to its own ground, hating the famine of meditation. (839) Serenity is unmoving like a mountain, insight is agile like a fish. The mind remains steady, regarding non-elaboration as reality. That is what is said. Here in Tibet, those who mix mental events with meditative equipoise, those who disrupt samadhi, think that such is the unsurpassed view of the Great Madhyamaka, but if measured from the perspective of realization, it has become the activity of meditative equipoise. Insight has become a dharma of mental engagement; these two, the act and the agent, cannot eliminate the two obscurations because they are contrary to the meaning of the Confession Sutra, which states: "Actions, mental engagement, and intellect are completely purified." However, because it is the nature of samadhi that distinguishes meanings, it is the cause for obtaining the mindfulness of the accumulation path and the power of mindfulness of the path of joining, merely a stepping stone to the path of seeing. Here, the Great Perfection of Naturalness is the noble path, the Tathagata's virtuous samadhi, which does not allow conceptualization to defile the great transcendence of the mindfulness of dharmata with the defilement of knowable objects. In primordial liberation, one does not meditate on further liberation. Soma. Self-abiding. Self-luminous. Uncontrived. Unstained is called ordinary awareness. However, because that name is too common, they choose rich dharma terms such as Suchness, Non-elaboration, Absence of Self-nature, and Dharmadhatu, and adorn the two truths like the horns of a yak. Mistaking understanding, experience, and realization, they abandon the profound tantras and agamas of the path of truth, and proclaim the secret words of the Dohakosha and others as the view of Heshang, which is ridiculous. Now, even the mouths of foolish meditators and the deluded say "mindfulness, mindfulness," but in reality, it is the mindfulness that recognizes its own nature, the mindfulness that does not stray from it.

Mindfulness. Among the three types of mindfulness that are without inherent existence, the first two are obscured by cognitive obscurations that grasp at "this" and "that." Therefore, as a means to abandon them, one should strive to accumulate the accumulation of merit, such as devotion and compassion. (840) The latter is the accumulation of wisdom, so in order to perfect it, one should not meditate. One must associate with the pure bodhicitta that is free from delusion. As it is said in the tantras: "As long as the eighth ground is not sharp, one is afraid of the inferior vehicle." If it is said like that, the path of mantra emphasizes the result, and although the meaning is profound, the wisdom that arises from the temporary means is instantaneous, so it has great increase and decrease, and the nature of not relying on warmth. It is exemplified by the wisdom of the third empowerment. In particular, due to the power of wind and mind, no matter what kind of alternating increase and decrease of experience and realization arises, in the vast, spacious, and inherently non-established state of emptiness grasping and true mindfulness that does not allow mental analysis, the conceptual thoughts of attachment and aversion dissipate like drawing lines on water. When such a thing arises, it is when the elaboration of consciousness ceases. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "The ultimate is not the object of consciousness, consciousness is considered to be conventional." After ceasing like this, it is necessary to prolong the duration of meditation. From the path of the Pāramitā vehicle, it is said that the five sense consciousnesses are transformed into wisdom in the state of higher paths. Those individuals who meditate alternately are dominated by the five aggregates and the eight collections of consciousness. Therefore, through the profound view and meditation arising from the expedient path of mantra, sometimes experience and realization arise simultaneously, and when the path truth appears as conventional truth, there is a special manifestation of the wisdom of individual self-awareness. Sometimes, due to the disturbance of external objects and wind-mind, the thusness of realization is obscured, and the manifestations and consciousness of the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance arise uncontrollably. At that time, if one is not taken care of by a qualified lama and does not understand the acceptance and rejection of the three vows of Prātimokṣa, Bodhisattva, and Mantra, and the nature of reality, but thinks that one has recognized the nature of mind, and then grasps a hollow, dark, and vague thought as meditation, (841) most of the foolish practitioners who act randomly with afflictions will go to the lower realms. Furthermore, some people who have a lot of learning, but are attached to the purification and liberation of cause and effect, will be controlled by the antidote of emptiness.
