Observing the continuity like the earth, similarly, now is the continuation of mindfulness. What is meant by the need to do the non-distracted awareness is the essence of oral instruction practice. Except for those with instantaneous types of faculties, otherwise, in most cases, one must first search. To eliminate that fault, one must relax as much as possible in a non-distracted state, just like saying "tighten tightly and loosen loosely." This is not the same as the essence of Dzogchen's mindfulness practice. Also, when strong attachment and aversion arise, if one looks at its essence, it is difficult to disappear immediately, because one is very accustomed to the attachment and aversion to be abandoned in lifetimes. Strong mindfulness is now only occasional, and it has turned to fabricated mindfulness. Because the strength of what should be abandoned and the antidote is unbalanced, one can only do that for the time being. This will not turn into the fault of deliberately blocking conceptual thoughts, nor is it unnecessary, just like when learning crafts such as writing and carving letters, the initial dimensions will definitely be substandard, but if one works hard on it, it will gradually become exquisite. It is not practice, but habit. Habit transforms into nature. This saying is true. When conceptual thoughts arise naturally and are naturally liberated, what should be abandoned and the antidote become the same, so the conceptual thoughts of attachment and aversion also appear from the beginning in a selfless way, but this will not happen in the beginning. Therefore, when feeling the movement, that conceptual thought seizes the origin of mindfulness, and the key to how the continuation of mindfulness relies on being easy, clear, and stable is not mistaken. (837) Even if attachment and aversion do not naturally subside, for it, unlike ordinary people, not only grasping the grasper and the grasped, but accumulating selflessness and emptiness, if it goes like that, it is enough for the time being. The characteristic of Dzogchen, the so-called mindfulness being complete in the essence of self-practice, refers to maintaining the continuity of the natural state in the momentary continuity of mindfulness, without needing to tighten, loosen, modify, or apply antidotes. Also, how are mindfulness and awareness said to arise like cause and effect, how are they distinguished? In general, mindfulness and awareness are widely mentioned in all practice texts, and I understand that the mindfulness here refers to fabricated mindfulness, such as the three trainings of individual liberation vows, Bodhisattva vows, and mantra vows, and the pure mindfulness of the generation stage, etc., the basis of mindfulness.

Therefore, in order to establish mindfulness knowing that its scent has not disappeared, similarly, remembering the view of conceptual thought as the realm of non-proliferation, guarding its continuity with mindfulness is like cause and effect being sequential. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "When mindfulness guards the door of the mind, then mindfulness will arise, and what has passed will also return." Thus it is. Dzogchen is the unity of view and meditation, not cultivating the memory of view and the mindfulness of meditation as two parts, but rather memory itself is perfected as the nature of samadhi, therefore mindfulness is seen as an obscuration of the knowable, appearing without cause and effect being sequential. The reason for this is that if there is memory, then the mindfulness that surpasses it is the defilement of wisdom; if there is no memory, then the knower without the knowable is confusion. As it was said before: "All dharmas without mindfulness follow after the loss of memory." Therefore it is clear. Although this is so, as long as one has not realized the nature of reality as it is, establishing the memory of emptiness and the thought that it has not disappeared as mindfulness is the view and meditation of conceptual thought (838), because it is the four that pervade and the two that transform, not separated from the mind-born wisdom. If one considers mindfulness to be the result of memory, then when abiding in the ultimate truth, memory becomes the knowable and mindfulness becomes the knower, unable to dispel the obscuration of practicing in two parts. However, for the memory of conceptualization that has the image of the ultimate truth, this is possible, because the memory of what is to be seen and the mindfulness of the seer appear as two mind-objects. As it was said before: "Those who have mind but no mindfulness, their hearing, thinking, and meditating are like pouring water into a broken pot, unable to abide in memory." Because the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, are all established on the basis of memory. Furthermore, even if there is a continuity of memory, when it appears as two parts of abiding and transforming, the way of abiding in its subtle differences and distinctions of good and bad is: by one's own power, when the rational conceptual thought merges into the memory of the nature of reality, the subtle differences and distinctions of good and bad will be highlighted, because the memory of the nature of reality is able to understand whether one is distracted or not, whether conceptual thoughts arise or not.
