From the moment of establishing mindfulness, it is the power of mindfulness on the path of joining. In the path of seeing, it is the first of the seven branches of enlightenment; in the path of meditation, it is also the seventh of the noble eightfold path, because mindfulness is mentioned, it is for the purpose of manifesting all the qualities of the five paths. In particular, the nature of mindfulness naturally abides equally in the Dharma of meditation, and is not controlled by agitation and dullness, which is called the Samadhi of the union of Shamatha and Vipassana. If one strives too hard, the mind will be distracted; if one is separated from the antidote of mindfulness and intention, Vipassana will be impaired. In short, all the virtuous Dharmas that exist on the path of accumulation and joining below this are conditioned, and their own nature is also accompanied by effort, so it is called conditioned mindfulness, which is placed on the path of ordinary beings and gradually distinguished. As it is said in the Treasury of Precious Instructions: 'The initial practitioner should not be distracted by conditioned phenomena. Subsequent learners should not be distracted by Dharmata. Through habituation, do not be distracted by the wisdom of memory and appearance. When it becomes space, there is no distraction, no distractor. When reliance reaches completion, the place of distraction is Dharmata. When Dharma is exhausted, it transcends the place of indication and expression. Please lead us to such a state.' Therefore, if a meditator abandons all the technical terms of the path and establishes it as the characteristic of mindfulness, then, in this way, the one who abides becomes the most supreme wise one, and for the lineage of sudden enlightenment, the characteristic of the Great Perfection is not to place mindfulness on top of Samadhi, but mindfulness itself is perfected as the nature of Samadhi, which is a particularly great difference in the ground. Even so, because there are many who like to accumulate karma and merit from good views, for those who do not understand so much, if they do not abide in Samadhi and protect it with mindfulness (825), and guide them like others, there will be a situation where they cannot be liberated from distraction. Therefore, in the order of the two ways of guarding, if we consider it from the first point of view, mindfulness itself is perfected as the nature of Samadhi, so there is no difference between the object of seeing and the seer. Even in the time of distraction, only conceptual thought itself has become mindfulness, just as the taste of mother and child is the same, mindfulness and conceptual thought become one taste, and there is no certainty of determination from the way of arising of sudden enlightenment. According to the second view, in the time of Samadhi, it is guarded by mindfulness; in the time of distraction, mindfulness itself has become conceptual thought, so it is controlled by the delusion of others. Also, as soon as mindfulness arrives, it enters Samadhi.

Just like fighting with a joyful heart, if you persevere with diligence, then when memory becomes strong, thoughts are sudden defilements, unable to bear the face of memory, like fire meeting combustibles, or raising a lamp in the dark, no matter how many thoughts arise, they will not harm meditation, thoughts themselves become memory, this is called the antidote, it is the power of mindfulness of volition. If you do not persevere with diligence, then the power of memory will become smaller and smaller, ignorance and the collection of thoughts will grow, and meditation will become fearful, like the example of a greedy shepherd. How is that? Previously, a very greedy shepherd found a large gold box from a pastoral monastery, he was so happy that he even relaxed the raising of livestock. He even forgot to eat, holding the gold box, alternating between his left and right hands. Even seeing crows and mice, he suspected that they would steal his gold box. He sang: The poor man has no tsampa in his hand. Sugar cubes mistaken for butter. Brought bad omens to people's teeth. After a few days there, his livestock got the plague, and some were robbed by beasts, suffering heavy losses (826), and he was pursued by the livestock owner, he was so greedy that he was reluctant to even say this, pretending to be sick and lying in the bushes. At night, when the cat came to steal the mouse, he also thought that it was coming to steal the gold box, so he thought of a way. He thought: If the gold box was given by the king, I would get a big family. At that time, my wife would give birth to a son. If he is proficient in knowledge and art, he will not be eaten by ghosts, and he will become a minister of the king. For this reason, the gold box will return to my own hands again, there is no doubt about it, so he danced even more happily, his mind was distracted, and the gold box slipped from his hand and fell into the bushes. At that time, he said to himself: Memory is more important than the gold box! Because the wish-fulfilling jewel of memory was lost. The gold box fell into the hands of the enemy. This consciousness without memory. Made the whole world bad. It is said that he said this. This example shows that because of the loss of memory, meditation becomes both internal and external
