It arises from virtue. The essence of a dharani is mindfulness, as the noble Manjushri said: "A dharani is said to be unfailing in mindfulness, undistracted in discrimination, unconfused in intelligence, manifesting wisdom, and knowing the words of all dharmas distinctly." And so on. Even with something as simple as alms-gathering, if one constantly lacks mindfulness and awareness, and goes to places like dog kennels, one will incur great faults that burn oneself and others. Therefore, one should abandon these behaviors, as extensively explained in the sutras. As the Jewel Cloud says: "Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva sees beings with small roots of virtue, those who possess meager roots of virtue suffering, then for the benefit of those beings, he takes the vow to gather alms. When he goes to a village, city, or suburb for alms, he should maintain mindfulness very closely, conduct himself with propriety, keep his senses unwavering, his senses not coarse, his senses tamed, look only as far as the length of a yoke, maintain mindfulness of virtuous dharmas, and go for alms. If he goes for alms, then he should gather alms in sequence, not entering villages of Brahmin lineage as tall and large as sala trees, not entering villages of royal lineage as tall and large as sala trees, not entering villages of householders as tall and large as sala trees, not entering wealthy villages, but starting from one edge (821) and continuing until his purpose is achieved. Furthermore, a portion of what is gathered from alms is set aside for those who practice equally with oneself. The second portion is set aside for those who are suffering. The third portion is set aside for those who have fallen into wrong paths. The fourth portion is for oneself to eat, starting with 'I eat,' eating moderately, and with the thought of nourishing the worms, and so on. Likewise, the alms-gatherer should not act with the mind of a thief or robber. The necessity of giving is: to Light Protector (Kasyapa Buddha), one should seek food thinking of all beings. When there is no food, one should seek food. In order to dispel the grasping of others' morsels, one should go for alms. Bless the empty village, you enter the village.

One should remember the necessity and basis of what was said. In general, the actions of body and speech are transformed by the mind. A mind controlled by afflictions is like an elephant drunk with alcohol. At that time, it is not just about looking for opportunities, but the tamer with mindfulness and awareness strikes the head with an iron hook, and ties it with a good nose rope, bearing the burden of all the practices and vows from the three baskets to the ocean of tantras, entering the uninterrupted path, and thus attaining the state of liberation and omniscience. As it is said: On the ground of practice, if the elephant of the mind is let loose, it will only cause harm in the Avici hell. With the rope of universal mindfulness, if the elephant of the mind is tightly bound, all fears will disappear, and all virtues will be in hand. Thus it is said. In particular, the nature of samadhi is not separate from mindfulness. Thus, the path of tranquility beyond the world for bodhisattvas (822), namely the four worldly meditations, the four formless absorptions, and one cessation, all nine, also become the abode of special insight, becoming an unstated antidote, becoming one, therefore it is called samadhi or meditation. As it is said in the Jewel Cloud Sutra: The nature of samadhi is the mind abiding in one point. Its characteristic is: for example, when a hero draws a bow, or the tuning pegs of a lute are tightened, the strings are in place and remain taut, like the meditation with objects such as bodhicitta and the generation stage, or likewise, the completion stage with the object of suchness, whenever mindfulness abides in the place of meditation, mindfulness is constantly in place, therefore the name of samadhi is also obtained. Regarding the methods of eliminating obstacles, abandoning, counteracting, and combining, the antidotes to laziness are faith, desire, effort, and extreme pliancy, the antidote to forgetfulness is mindfulness, the antidote to dullness and excitement is awareness, the antidote to effort is relaxation, and the antidote to non-effort is attention, although divided into six aspects, at all times, it can overcome the nature of co-emergent ignorance—forgetfulness, therefore there must be mindfulness.
