Even if done, if it is done with a distracted mind, it is said by the wise to be meaningless. If one does not guard the chief of the Dharma, this weakness of the mind, even if one wants to attain happiness and destroy suffering, those are just meaningless wanderings. Therefore, this mind of mine should be well guarded. If one does not understand the asceticism of guarding the mind, what is the use of doing many ascetic practices? This is clearly stated, and like this, with profound wisdom that distinguishes the meaning of words, one can gather virtuous Dharma like an ocean, and there will be no mistakes in what to take and what to abandon. In particular, whether it is listening to, reading, upholding, explaining, or reciting sutras and treatises, by engaging in reflective study of the meaning of the words, a special understanding will arise. If one cannot study through one's own power, then by asking virtuous friends and those who are more intelligent than oneself, one's own wisdom will also increase like the waxing moon. For example, taking the first turning of the wheel of Dharma as an example, monks should understand suffering, should abandon the origin, should realize cessation, and should rely on the path. By contemplating these meanings, one will understand that suffering is the fault of samsara. The cause of suffering is the origin, its nature is ignorance, the condition is the karma created by the collection of afflictions arising from mind and mental factors. If one abandons it, the result of suffering will cease. Like this, abandoning requires relying on the truth of the path, so it is said that one should rely on the path. Then how to rely on it? The "Three Hundred Verses" says: Abandon killing, stealing the wealth of others, non-brahmacharya, lying, adulterated alcohol, etc., dancing, garlands, etc., excessively high beds, afternoon food, and accepting gold and silver. Discipline is the battlefield for conquering the enemy of afflictions, with the asceticism of individual liberation like a lotus in water, it is the method of destroying the harm of death, it is the empowerment to obtain the glory of complete enlightenment. This shows that the training in superior discipline is widely proclaimed. Similarly, one should also understand the middle and later turnings of the wheel of Dharma. As stated in the "Abhidharmakosha": By abiding in discipline, having listening and thinking, one can best practice meditation.
