There are three types of almsgiving related to distractions: giving, great giving, and supreme giving. The first is: For those who are afflicted by poverty and suffering, one should strive to greatly increase the assembly of offerings of alms. In the past, in the kingdom of the golden king, there was a famine, and the king had only one container of grain in his treasury, which he offered to a Pratyekabuddha. Through this merit, the famine in the country was pacified. Furthermore, the Teacher (Buddha) said, "Whatever is given to others is one's own. What one holds onto is another's." The second is: For those who are tormented by desire, one should train them to give away sons, wives, and lands. The third is: The practice of the noble ones, which is giving away heads, eyes, and limbs. Even if one cannot actually do it, one should make it the object of aspiration, like visualizing giving away the body, which is in accordance with the aspiration for bodhicitta. The second is: For ghosts and spirits, give three portions of food and effigies; for pretas, offer water libations. Among them are also the dharani called "Good Form" (གཟུགས་ལེགས་,,,Good Form), as well as the essence of the Wisdom Meteor, the offering ritual of the preta mother exhaling fire from her mouth, the dharani for giving refuge to those exhaling fire from their mouths, and the dharani called "Obstruction," and so on. In the dharani of the one exhaling fire from the mouth, four names are mentioned. Some say to meditate on the four Tathagatas on the crown of the head, etc., but the actual teachings of the scriptures only mention the blessings and benefits of reciting the names, and do not explain the object of contemplation and (795) meditation. Similarly, the names of the four non-abiding ones are not mentioned either, so this is just a simple act of giving. Therefore, for those who do not understand the rituals of the torma that are mixed according to their own desires, I can also recite the dharanis such as "Samabharajangpa" or "Surupa," "Great Power," and "Obstruction," as well as the water offering with the four names recited. Similarly, for the crippled, give the body; for the robbed mother and child, give ransom; for the Gandharvas, make incense offerings, and so on. Also, the incense offerings to the gods, food offerings, water libations, one hundred and four, etc., which are famous in the scriptures, for these guests who have gathered both offerings and alms, one should also strive to accumulate merit and virtuous Dharma. Because there is not a single sentient being who has not experienced this life, and there is not a single sentient being who has not been a parent, one should protect them with noble actions, be friendly with them with moderate actions, and respect them with humble actions.
