All (karma) accumulated through non-giving, taking, and other unwholesome actions should be abandoned. The sutra says: 'Stolen and plundered goods, items not given to others, extremely precious and pleasing items, if needed, are the best.' It also says: 'Do not mix with evil, poison, and wrongly earned goods, as well as weapons, etc.' Therefore, one must be free from all these faults and engage in fearless giving of Dharma and worldly things, namely the six perfections led by the three types of giving. It is necessary to be free from their respective opposites. Third, for whom should it be done? The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: 'Whether directly or indirectly, do not train in anything that is not for the benefit of sentient beings. For the sake of the intention to benefit sentient beings, dedicate everything to enlightenment.' As it is said, all sentient beings, like the sky, are kind benefactors who have not been kind to us from beginningless time until now, so generate great compassion for all of them and dedicate impartially for the benefit of all. Having dedicated in this way, since the realm of sentient beings is limitless, merit will also become limitless. The Ratnavali says: 'The realm of sentient beings is limitless, and the desire to benefit them is also the same.' Fourth, explaining the way to dedicate, including the benefits, and then entering into the actual dedication. Like this, even if there is a sea-like amount of contaminated roots of virtue, if it is not increased by pure dedication, or if anger arises towards a powerful place, or due to the four causes of exhaustion, etc., the good result of merit will ripen once and then be exhausted, as many scriptures say. Panchen Vimala also said: 'The nature of conditioned things, if not grasped by supreme dedication, the end of accumulation is certain to be exhausted.' Being grasped by supreme dedication will never be wasted. The Sagaramati Sutra says: 'For example, in a valley of a great mountain, a tree grows, and a person begins to cut it from the root. Once it is cut, it will surely fall in the direction it leans. Similarly, a Bodhisattva also focuses on omniscience for a long time and dedicates all the roots of virtue to omniscience, therefore he will not fall into other vehicles.'
