Therefore, one dwells alone without relying on anything. The intermediate one relies slightly on walls, etc., but abandons reliance on the left and right, etc. The small one relies slightly on the chest, etc., but never puts his head on a pillow. As it is, a seat of grass or leaves, one sleeps on it after laying it down. This also means laying it down only once and changing it frequently, striving to disparage the method of craving for dwelling places. Thus, there are three kinds of reliance on food, similarly, there are three kinds of reliance on clothing, one kind of reliance on conduct, and five kinds of reliance on dwelling places. These twelve qualities of practice abandon desire and attachment, abide in pure conduct, and make the mind gentle and workable, therefore they are known as the qualities of practice. In short, two monks, one who has been fully ordained for hundreds of years and one who has been newly ordained, in order to accomplish the same reason for discipline, two preceptors and two teachers of the place, who possess the four branches of being virtuous, skilled in serving, and benefiting, should be approached for instruction and action. Among them, the branch of virtue is that the image of discipline is not defiled by defeat, not defiled by blameworthy non-virtue, and the branch of stability is that after being fully ordained for ten years, the discipline is stable. The branch of skill is knowing the Vinaya Pitaka. If these three are complete, then the preceptor and teacher can act, and the three qualities of being able to dwell independently (553) are explained. The branch of benefiting is that one possesses compassion and patience, the inner circle is pure, both benefiting are diligent, the views are the same, and one is able to speak and understand the meaning, knowing the nature of abiding. The ordinary body abiding is the nature of abiding. Thus, although most of the twelve are easy to understand, not knowing the nature of abiding is madness. If such a person becomes a preceptor, then the object to be accomplished will generate faults, as well as Dharma and wealth. Similarly, the ordinary body means generating the fault of carrying wool, etc. Similarly, if one dwells in another place, then the preceptor, etc., should abandon special behaviors. Those who have been fully ordained for ten years, but do not know the Vinaya Pitaka, cannot dwell without relying on the Dharma master of the place, and are subject to others. Thus, the meaning of explaining the basis of the Vinaya is that in the three with prohibition, there is subsequent prohibition and permission, and in the three with accomplishment, there is subsequent accomplishment.

Please grant permission! Permission and precepts, these three, with precepts and permission, granting, prohibiting, and accomplishing. The precepts and so on are the basis of learning, from these bases, there are two hundred and fifty precepts of abandoning, and seventeen precepts of entering that should be taken. Depending on the Khenpo and Acharya, until the end of life. Abiding in the precepts, diligently listening, contemplating, and meditating, if abandoning and taking are practiced, then the first of the four doors of arising downfalls—the door of ignorance—will be closed. Thus, individual liberation will become meaningful. In short, the difference between one who holds precepts and one who does not lies in being unstained by fundamental defeats. On top of that, even a subtle branch of precepts is more powerful than the sinful image of a natural transgression. The master said, "A corrupt precept is an image of non-virtue." Therefore, relative to a subtle branch of precepts, a natural transgression is sinful, harmful to others, based on the root, and abides in many things (554). If one does not take it seriously, breaking the precepts will hinder cause and effect. Even so, in this last of the five hundred years, the precious teachings are close to the signs of decline. Merely through tea, blessings, saliva, and shoes, one experiences the omens and prophecies of Kṛti (Sanskrit: kṛti). In such times, even if the twelve qualities are abandoned as if by someone in the snowy mountains, where is the auspiciousness of birth and the renunciation of fear? To encourage going to solitary places, therefore, this is prayed. The five places of the teacher, such as the uncovered place, people turn away from these teachings and seek large covered places. This is to abandon the small home and seek the large home. Distraction scatters the mind and causes one to fall away from the Dharma. The faults of worldly things, like poison, are that due to enemies and friends, attachment and aversion, bias and strife, one focuses on thoughts and actions, and on gaining and not gaining, and so on. Bound by the ropes of the eight worldly dharmas, renunciation is driven to the edge of non-dharma like a wild animal. In the midst of many gatherings, enjoying the substance of wrong livelihood, again and again, one's own continuum is exhausted. The actions of living by nature miss the opportunity, and in the form of a renunciate, one becomes a maker of the ground for bad migrations. Having thought in this way, remembering the virtues of solitude praised in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp, abandoning trade, agriculture, and noisy places, quickly go to the forests of the borderlands. There, the birds, wild animals, and bees have no animosity or strife, so one's own continuum is softened. Under the trees, in uncovered places, and in cemeteries, and so on, the purpose of the dwelling places...
