Where? May there be auspiciousness for those who can manifest enlightenment in one lifetime and one body, possessing great fortune! This is called 'Words to be Sent to the Holy One,' Sent to the Tulku of Dzogchen in Do Kham, Completed by Dzogchenpa Rangjung Dorje. Twelfth Chapter of the Collection of Talks. (532) Words of Encouragement to the Great Ascetic to Practice in Seclusion. Homage to Manjushri, the Youthful One! Your name is Utpala, At the moment of wearing earrings, in the center of your heart, The deer of knowledge and knowable shine brightly, I bow to the youthful sun of speech! Not bound by good wishes as law, Not swollen with pride of hearing and thinking, To the person who strives for liberation, The race of righteous ones speaks the truth. Many bodies of leisure are available, The last two of self and others' wealth, If one examines the coming and going like a magic trick, The precious human body is rare in the world. Moreover, being deluded by the wheel of birth, old age, and death, Combining with those who have the nature of gathering and dispersing, Fearing this, even the son of Shakya, Escaped from the royal palace, so do we. Are you satisfied with this value of attachment? In the midst of the snowy mountains, indulging in the dharma of fear, Mostly neither dharma nor worldly, In the midst of attachment, aversion, food, clothing, and the noise of speech, Many go to the next world empty-handed. The fault of desire, which is difficult to fill, is that No matter how much one has, contentment does not arise, Be weary of the state of cause and effect, which is painful by accumulating, protecting, and increasing. Rejoicing in samsara and having great partiality towards self and others, Ungrateful, benefit and harm cannot be constant, Stay away from those who like noise, children, and bad friends, Like a deer escaping from a trap. With hearing and thinking that keep this life in mind, And the image of law devoid of renunciation, One cannot go on the path of liberation (533), Therefore, from today onwards, go to a solitary place. There is no end to hearing, No matter how much, one will not be weary of samsara. Do you see that the pride and noise arising from this are becoming the makers of falling into the lower realms? Especially the practitioners of the excellent land, Even if they diligently practice the twelve qualities, They have become like those abandoned by the people of the snowy mountains.

Abandoning the small home, many are the affairs of the great home; The forest edge, praised by the Victorious Ones, is vast. Free from the noise, the eight worldly dharmas arise; There is no trade, no seeds, no children, no wicked friends. To befriend birds and wild animals is filled with bliss; The bends of rocky mountains, the mansions of leaves, In accordance with discipline, the small hermitage, Is easy to practice in, is quiet, and has little distraction. Without attachment to it, going and staying are comfortable; The swaying of trees moved by the wind, The sound of flowing water gurgling, There are no seeds of non-virtue born from body and speech. Based on this, renunciation and the mind of renunciation increase. The faults of the place, which in lifetime after lifetime create ruin, are more potent than poison, But in solitary places they are extremely few, And the paths of action based on the mind are also rare. Differences, groups, power, and dominion, Mutual competition, majestic oppression, The doors of noise arising from strife and mixing, Being far from the place of dividing into hundreds, This leakage of aggregates, piled up like bubbles, Will not be mistaken for being as solid as the king of mountains, And one also becomes weary of a life like a butter lamp, Full of harm and dwelling in the midst of the wind. Those who thus know the multitude of faults, fearing places that are not independent in future lives (534), Do not err in what to adopt and abandon, And extend far the thoughts and efforts of practicing in this life. At that time, you will transform the four truths, And the scriptures and reasoning of the four philosophical schools, Which have been familiarized through hearing and thinking, From nominal to ultimate and definitive meaning. Uprooting the seeds of samsara, Is emptiness; as for its mode of existence, Speculation cannot bear to examine it, Examine the nature of reality in your mind. Examining in that way, the uncommon, Wisdom born of thought, which is particularly excellent, And contrary to outward hearing and thinking, Wisdom born of meditation, which is completely pure, arises. Thus, dependent arising is the meaning of the sacred, Without arising, it eliminates the extreme of permanence, Without ceasing, it eliminates the extreme of annihilation, The view free from elaboration is the Great Middle Way. In order to cultivate that view through meditation, The mind of enlightenment that transcends going, coming, aspiration, and engagement, The meaning beyond thought that contradicts one and many, Is close mindfulness.
