I prostrate again and again, you are the Buddha (374)! This is the basis for praising the Vinaya Pitaka. Relying on the training in higher morality, which teaches transgressions and precepts, one can temporarily attain the state of higher rebirth, and ultimately destroy all the hosts of enemies, including the two obscurations and their imprints. Therefore, the explanations of the terms Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, and Arhat are also established. The definition of such a higher training in morality is as stated in the "Three Hundred Verses": Whoever abandons killing, stealing, unchaste conduct, lying, and intoxicants such as prepared alcohol, dancing, garlands, high and large beds, untimely food, and gold and silver, is called morality that conquers the enemy of afflictions. The novice's discipline is like building a dam, a means of extracting the claws of the Lord of Death, and is also the glorious empowerment of perfect enlightenment. By meditating on the nine unattractive thoughts, one overcomes the river of all afflictions and the collection of faults. Like building a dam to restrain the established precepts, one is extremely delighted with discipline, and therefore it is established as the foundation of the teachings. Thus, the Pratimoksha Pitaka is the beginning of the path to liberation, and the Vinaya is the basis of medicine. Monks, if you cultivate morality (375), you will abide in Samadhi for a long time. If you cultivate Samadhi, you will abide in wisdom for a long time. If you cultivate wisdom, then in this way, the mind will be completely liberated from desire, hatred, and ignorance. The Vinaya Pitaka teaches through the precepts of the Pratimoksha vows, disciplining beings to be tamed with the aggregate of morality. Not transgressing the precepts, one is free from regret and attains single-pointed Samadhi. The Sutra Pitaka elaborately distinguishes the three trainings of both the Great and Small Vehicles, and focuses on the training of higher mind. The Abhidharma Pitaka, in order to not be mistaken about the nature of what is being explained, and in order to accomplish the wisdom that distinguishes all dharmas, intends to focus on the training of higher wisdom.

Now. Regarding this meaning, I will briefly explain it based on the treatises of the Noble Ones and their commentaries. The Letter to a Friend states: Liberation depends on oneself; in this, others have no help to offer. Therefore, strive for the four truths, endowed with learning, discipline, and meditation. One should always train in higher discipline, higher wisdom, and higher mind. Even the one hundred and fifty-odd trainings are completely contained within these three. As it is said, liberation does not depend on the guidance of friends, but entirely on oneself, with much learning that is in accordance with scriptural authority, reasoning, logic, and examination, and with discipline that is without impairment, breakage, downfall, or failure, and with meditation that is in accordance with the aspect of discernment, one should focus on the four noble truths. (376) What are the four? They are the truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path. The first is the suffering truth, which is the nature of the arising of the five aggregates of appropriation. The second is the origin truth, which is the craving for rebirth, accompanied by attachment to joy and pleasure, taking delight in this and that. From this, all suffering arises, hence it is the origin, which is taught as the cause of suffering. The third is the cessation truth, which is the complete cessation and pacification of that craving, which is liberation. The fourth is the path truth, which is the path to attain nirvana, the eightfold noble path. Right view is wisdom without defilements. Right livelihood is abandoning the five wrong livelihoods, such as flattery. Right effort is exerting effort. Right mindfulness is not forgetting the object of focus. Right concentration is the four dhyanas. Right speech is the four virtuous actions. Right action is the nature of abandoning the three non-virtuous actions of the body. Right thought is thought without malice and thought of renunciation, and so on, with various kinds of thought. Likewise, higher discipline is that which is completely dedicated to nirvana. Higher mind is the four dhyanas, the basis of the noble path. Higher wisdom is defin
