And, by showing the meaning of words in a concise way, and by distinguishing the categories of upper and lower parts, the Buddha's teachings are most clearly revealed. By distinguishing between the definitive meaning, the provisional meaning, the hidden meaning, and the non-definitive meaning, that is, by distinguishing the four ways of sutras, it has the qualities of correcting and protecting, thus widely clarifying the tenets of Madhyamaka, which is the explanation of the meaning of the three baskets. He made the explanation of the first teaching of the collection of words, the explanation of the middle of the collection of wisdom, and the explanation of the last of the collection of praises. Similarly, Aryadeva made the Four Hundred Verses, etc., Lekdenjé made the Avalokiteśvara asceticism, etc., and Chandrakirti made the Clear Words and the Introduction to the Middle Way, etc. When more than nine hundred years were approaching a thousand, the master Asaṅga and his brother, etc., appeared, and Asaṅga practiced Maitreya, thus spreading the five teachings of Maitreya widely in the world. In particular, he himself made the treatises Five Subjects, Two Compendiums, etc., and the twenty teachings related to Maitreya, so the glorious protector Nāgārjuna and Asaṅga are known as the two great chariots, and are also the chief of the six ornaments that beautify the world. The six ornaments are Nāgārjuna, Āryaśūra, Asaṅga, Vasubandhu, Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, and Guṇaprabha. If counted as the eight supreme ones, the Omniscient One added Āryadeva, Candragomin, and the three heroes above them, and subtracted Dignāga. Thus it is said, and elsewhere, the distinction of the two supreme ones is very famous. Thus, represented by the six ornaments and the two supreme ones who adorn the Jambudvipa, many great upholders of the teachings appeared, cherishing the precious doctrine of the Shākya lion's scriptural and realized teachings, and spreading it to the ends of the sky. Here it is said: The gatherer of the Teacher's retinue and the way of upholding the teachings, even if shown as different, are the manifestation of the definitive victorious one's own great wisdom, and not other than that, the wise ones discuss the nature of speech. For the sake of the dull-witted and the trainable who have faith in cause and effect, even though the conclusion of the conventional vehicle is immeasurable and countless, since it is not placing the result on the path, it is somewhat exhausted by the elaboration of the three countless eons. The four extremes of conceptualization are liberated into the sphere, whose own nature is completely

. Because the attachment to the superior and the way of clinging to self-view have disappeared, being in the equality of liberation, because of fearing that it is the essence of the ocean of sutras and tantras, those who speak of permanence and annihilation in the Buddhist way are still toiling in the ocean of samsara! This is the verse of the occasion. Second, regarding the duration of the teachings, there are common and uncommon aspects. According to the common explanation, the Sutra of the Fortunate Aeon and the Vinaya Minor Texts state that the actual teachings will last for five hundred years, and the semblance of the teachings will last for five hundred years, totaling one thousand years. The Karuna Pundarika Sutra states two thousand years, and the Moon Essence Sutra states two thousand years. The Hundred Thousand Commentaries, the Destroyer of Harm, states five thousand years, and Kamalaśīla, in the commentary on the Vajra Cutter Sutra, states five hundred five hundreds. Among these, the first statement is made from the perspective of those who attain liberation being the majority, the second statement is made from the perspective of entering the fruit and studying the scriptures, and the third statement is made from the perspective of the majority's view and practice being in accordance. Here, in the Maitreya Prophecy Sutra, it is said: Shariputra, after my complete nirvana, for five thousand years, these five phenomena will gradually disappear. What are the five? The first is that those who have attained the fruit will disappear. And so on, explained according to such a system. Dividing the five thousand years into two halves, that is, ten five hundreds. Among them, the ordination of women such as the Lady of Creation, the last five hundred years will only maintain the symbol, which is said to be decline. That is, the era of the fruit has three five hundreds, the era of the scriptures has three five hundreds, the era of practice has three five hundreds, and the era of merely maintaining the symbol has one five hundred, totaling ten five hundreds. In the era of the fruit, in the first of the three five hundreds, there are many arhats and non-returners, and there are also once-returners. In the second five hundred, there are many non-returners, and there are also once-returners. In the third five hundred, there are many stream-enterers, and there are also a few others. Here, others put practice before and scriptures after, but the Omniscient One does not consider it pure. In the three eras of the scriptures, the first era is Abhidharma, the second era is Sutra, and the third era is Vinaya, which flourishes and has many upholders. In the three eras of practice, the first era is ethics, the second era is mind, and the third era is the study of wisdom.
