Not clinging to the extremes, each is the self-aware wisdom. Briefly stating Manjushri's view, it says in the sutra: Wisdom is the empty mind, without any habitual tendencies. And so on. In the great hermitage of calm abiding, proclaiming the clamor of insight is a manifestation of not distinguishing well between suchness and allness. In the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it says: Calm abiding is single-pointedness of mind. Insight is accurately discriminating the Dharma as it is. This is clear. Therefore, ultimately not recognizing that calm abiding and insight are of the same essence, without distinction, considering all abiding as calm abiding and all examination as insight, is something that deviates from the teachings of the Tathagata. In the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it says: The calm abiding of a Bodhisattva is correct thought, not abiding in the notion of tranquility. Insight is the seeing of views, and even the view itself is not seen. Whoever sees in this way sees correctly. Because it contradicts the above sutra. The individual differences are: In the aspect of the two, two distinctions are established: arising from wisdom and arising from oral instructions. Arising from wisdom, in accordance with the sound, focusing on the meaning of what is heard is calm abiding, and realizing the meaning from that is the characteristic of insight. Arising from oral instructions, following the meaning, the mind not wavering is calm abiding, and knowing its nature is insight. As it is said in the Noble Sutra Unraveling the Intent: Calm abiding and insight are two, arising from wisdom and arising from oral instructions. Arising from wisdom is: keeping in mind the words of the twelve categories of scriptures is calm abiding, and realizing its meaning is insight. Arising from oral instructions is: making the mind unwavering through oral instructions is calm abiding, and realizing its meaning is insight. And so on. Therefore, if one does not understand the difference that the first is the preliminary practice of meditation and the latter is the actual practice, even having arrived at the destination, one does not abandon the effort of the path, and therefore one does not attain the pacification of the senses. Even so, the way to combine with the faculties of the individual is: In short, the superior one relaxes bad thoughts into the Dharmakaya, when good and bad are equal, there is no need to rely on antidotes. The middling one combines faith and clarity.

Through familiarity with the path, all thoughts of good and bad dissolve into the expanse. Initially, the inferior practitioner cultivates only calm abiding. Once stability in the object of focus is attained, one should become accustomed to the wisdom of insight, discriminating each phenomenon. Eventually, just as one cannot find earth and stones on the Isle of Gold, whatever thoughts of mind and mental factors arise, they appear as the great primordial liberation, inseparable from appearance and mind. Furthermore, for those of superior faculties, awareness becomes confident, and no matter how many illusions of samsara arise, such as discursive thoughts and afflictions, in the very moment they arise, they are liberated into the Dharmakaya, without leaving a trace. Good does not add benefit, and bad does not bring harm, so there is no need to rely on antidotes, because the knowing that has never lingered on an object arises and liberates simultaneously in the state of awareness. As it says in 'Self-Arisen': 'Because there is no birth, there is no cessation; because there is no grasping, there is self-liberation.' And in the 'All-Creating King' it says: 'As it is, without contrivance, in the intention of the Victorious Ones, whatever thoughts of mind and mental factors arise, knowing that they abide in the state of no-birth, one is free from all conceptual elaborations of actions and signs.' Thus it is said. Those of middling faculties, without losing the state of understanding the view of no-birth, cultivate practice free from dullness and agitation. In the samadhi that unites calm abiding and insight, in a space like the sky, all the proliferations of mind and mental factors dissolve like clouds disappearing. As it says in the 'King of Samadhi Sutra': 'Just as in the sky there is a little absence of clouds, and in an instant a circle of clouds appears, having arisen and then vanished, the circle of clouds is no more. One should examine from where it first arose. Know that all phenomena are likewise.' Thus it is said. The difference between dullness and agitation is that dullness is close to the obscured, the unspecified, while agitation belongs to the category of ignorance, so the Sravakas of Master Asanga also distinguished their functions separately. The inferior practitioner is like a monkey, with a mind that is distracted and untamed, blown by the wind, not staying in place even for a moment, so one must generate diligence and contemplate. As it says in the 'All-Creating King': 'The purity of two and non-two is what is named meditation and non-meditation.' Thus it is said. That is, focusing the mind closely on the object of focus, like a lamp not moved by the wind, is single-pointed awareness.
