From the perspective of holding the five, it is referred to as the five sense consciousnesses. The functions of the Alaya-vijñana are: first, to act as the basis of delusion; second, to connect with body and mind, experiencing pleasure and pain; third, to act as the cause for connecting the body with various aggregates; and fourth, to accumulate karma and afflictions, and to establish the connection of cause and effect. As it is said in the 'Self-Arisen Bliss Wheel': 'Although the five senses are the objects of appearance, if they are not examined by the mind, they are Alaya-vijñana but not consciousness. Moreover, the various habitual tendencies of the mind consciousness, even if they are distributed, cannot cause the habitual tendencies to increase; although it is consciousness, it is not Alaya-vijñana. Whatever the five forms appear as, they are completely mingled with non-duality, and the place where the eight consciousnesses gather and assemble is called Alaya-vijñana.' In short, the reason why Alaya-vijñana is called Alaya-vijñana is: because it retains the traces of previous karma, it is habitual tendencies; because it receives the later ones, it is maturation; because of the order in which cause and effect mature successively; and as the common connector of pleasure and pain, it is called Alaya-vijñana. If this kind of distinction is not made, and one mistakenly thinks that 'Alaya-vijñana is the basis of all things, and also the basis of Nirvana,' and regards Alaya-vijñana as the Dharmakaya, then even if it is refuted in the common vehicle, what need is there to mention it in the supreme secret vehicle? 'Self-Arisen' says: 'Some people think that Alaya-vijñana is the Dharmakaya, in order to answer and explain this, the characteristics of Alaya-vijñana are like this.' Then he replied: 'Because everything is complete, it is Alaya-vijñana.' Then he refuted with a questioning statement: 'Is it reasonable for the Buddha to change? Because Alaya-vijñana manifests in various ways, because everything is completed from it, sentient beings can become Buddhas. Why is everything complete? Or will it become alternating? Why does it manifest in various ways? Sometimes it will become a Buddha, sometimes it will become a sentient being. Why is there alternation?', then he asked back, saying: 'Then, is there no Alaya-vijñana?' Then he answered the question, saying: 'Alaya-vijñana clings to conceptual thoughts, and is deceived by various erroneous knowledge, Alaya-vijñana is an object of ignorance.' Therefore, these two need to be carefully distinguished. The 'Klod Drugpa' also says: All

If the basis and Dharmakaya are indistinguishable, it is like perceiving one form as different, unable to manifest their respective meanings. So it is said. Among them, the characteristics of Dharmakaya are: its essence is the emptiness essence of wisdom, its nature is the clarity essence of light, and its compassion is the uninterrupted essence of awareness. Therefore, it has cut off the root of mind, thought, and ignorance, and transcends the practice of the stages and paths. As it is said in 'Self-Arising': The palace of Dharmakaya is immutable, clearly abiding in the center of each citta (Tibetan: ཙིཏྟ།). The essence of emptiness wisdom! The essence of clear light! The essence of self-born awareness! The Dharmakaya possesses three essences. Realizing the meaning of wisdom, there is no traversing the stages and paths. This great Dharmakaya, beyond the reach of words, abides in all, yet is not realized by all. Without mind, without thought, without the delusion of ignorance. So it is said. Furthermore, although the Dharmakaya, Bodhicitta, self-arising wisdom, and the spontaneously accomplished great expanse are symbolized by words, the act of symbolizing itself is conceptual thought. Therefore, revealing one's own face is inexpressible, beyond thought, free from elaboration, and unique. Thus, the state of Dharmakaya is called the Great Perfection. Unlike the Yogacara-Cittamatra school, which does not acknowledge self-knowing self-illumination, and unlike the Madhyamaka school, which uses emptiness like the sky as a reference for measuring boundlessness, because there is no inner or outer and no three times, it is not established as the mind of ordinary beings. Because there is no self or other, it is not established as one's own awareness, like the eternalist views of non-Buddhists. Although there has never been a grasper or grasped, it is not like the samadhi of cessation, devoid of the two knowledges. Although it is not in the realm of perception, it does not abide as an opponent to insight. Although there is no mind or mental factors, it is not established as an unspecified mind like the twelve sources. Because there is no clarity or non-clarity, it is not established as the self-illumination of the alaya-vijnana. Because it transcends awareness and non-awareness, awareness is also posited as merely a path appearance, thereby purifying the obscurations of knowledge. This is the state of no self-nature, the Dharma-nature of great wisdom. As it is said in the 'Unwavering Dharma-nature Sutra': All dharmas are unborn by nature, the essence of the entity is unwavering, free from the extremes of action, transcending the realm of elaboration.
