Saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are also one in the nature of the ground awareness. As it says in Rangshar, "The ground of sentient beings and the ground of the Buddha, are definitely distinguished by one difference." How are they distinguished? If the spontaneous display of skill is not liberated on top of awareness and becomes dependent on others, then it becomes the basis of many appearances like opening a brocade, the initial appearance of all the habitual tendencies of the three realms, the intermediate action, and the final container, so it is called the ālaya. As it says in Rangshar, "The ālaya grasps conceptual thoughts, is deceived by various confused consciousnesses, the ālaya is an object of ignorance, therefore it is called the basis of all." "All" is a plural word, and "basis" is abiding as the basis of various collections. The dharmakāya is not transformed into the dependence of ignorance, and since it transcends mind and mental events, it is not a container of various objects, nor does it abide together with the mind, etc., which holds between the object and the subject, and since it is not defiled by the thoughts of actions and habitual tendencies, it transcends the continuum of memory. As it says in the Garland of Pearls, "The dharmakāya is exhausted of defilements, empty and clear, clear and pervasive, not defiled by thoughts, memory is clear, it is free from the nature of elaboration, pervasive and empty like the sky, free from all symbols of self-purity." It is also distinguished from the door of the dependent and the depended upon, the ālaya is the dependent, the mind is the depended upon, the dharmakāya is the dependent, and wisdom is the depended upon. As it says in the Sixth Space, "Alas! Great being, the abode of the mind is the ālaya. Why is that? The ālaya is the collection of all objects of thought, and because it is known as the mind. The abode of wisdom is the dharmakāya. Why is that? The dharmakāya does not possess all thoughts and concepts, and because there is no consciousness that grasps objects as different entities." For example, distinguishing from the door of analogy is like a ship floating on the ocean. Thus, the dharmakāya is the awareness of primordial purity, free from elaboration, not established in any nature, but the cessation of the steps of various appearances also turns away from the adventitious stains, so it is like a clear ocean. Becoming the obscuration of that dharmakāya, the part of the awareness of the spontaneous display of skill is reversed, so the characteristic of the ālaya is the basis of all ignorance, and abiding as the pervasive and the essence, the mind inside the ship.

And sentient beings transformed by mental factors, karma, and habitual tendencies, are like being filled with various functions of the eight consciousnesses. As it says in 'Self-Arisen': 'The analogy of the Alaya and the Dharmakaya is like the ocean and a boat, they do not separate.' That is to say, the spontaneously present awareness does not change. The part of adventitious ignorance naturally reverts, and like a boat going to land, the obscurations of the Dharmakaya are purified by awakening, remaining in a state of possessing both. Like this, the essence of the Dharmakaya, the stainless awareness, is not something to be reversed in any way, because it exists in the ultimate state of liberation, like waking up from sleep. The nature of the Alaya is like being asleep, it is the basis for the arising of various illusions and dreams, so one needs to awaken from sleep. As it says in that very text: 'The analogy of delusion and liberation is like sleeping and waking, because there is a difference in the faculties.' That is to say, the Alaya and the phenomena that depend on it are impurities to be purified, so the aspects of sleep and dreams need to be reversed. However, the essence of the Dharmakaya, the stainless awareness, is something to be familiarized with temporarily and is the basis for ultimate realization and liberation, so it is not something to be reversed at any time, because it is the place of liberation of the result. If we differentiate, there is the Alaya of the original meaning, the Alaya of the combined meaning, the Alaya of the habitual body, the Alaya of various habitual tendencies, and the basis of existence. The first is described from the aspect of opening the door to samsara from within the state of the Dharmadhatu, with ignorance corresponding to the initial movement of discriminating awareness. The second is that the discriminating wisdom itself, because it is ignorance, combines with samsara by looking outward, while one's own nature, awareness, combines with nirvana. The third is that because the wisdom itself has the habitual tendencies of the body, it is designated from the aspect of the nature of earth being flesh, the nature of water being blood, the nature of fire being light, and the nature of wind being the manifestation of the mind-body. The fourth is described from the aspect of the various habitual tendencies of the mind of the wisdom itself depending on it. Although four reversals are described in this way, they are actually one entity, because the relationship between the dependent Alaya and the dependent eight consciousnesses exists. Because there is no interruption between inner and outer, it is named the Alaya consciousness, and for the sense consciousnesses, each of their wisdoms is a non-conceptual object.
