Now, in the union of the sun and moon, if suchness is not realized, yoga is like the body and its shadow. From that, that very nature arises spontaneously, so abandonment is not abandonment. Likewise, it is not through cultivation, nor does transformation change it. If the unchanging essence is not realized, like a crystal rock or jade stone, it cannot be polished or melted. In the naturally pure abode, it is discerned by those who possess yoga. Likewise, it is not even peace. One who does not know manifest insight, like Mount Meru, the king of mountains, cannot be destroyed by anyone, nor is it liberated by force. Without seeking self-purity, desiring to purify turbidity is like turbid water. Outwardly purifying it is not possible. Even if it is clear, it is not the nature of Dharma. Without knowing spontaneous self-appearance, it is like the appearance of an ordinary fool. It is not the cessation of manifest clinging. Thus it is said. Among these, in terms of the entry point of the levels of an individual's mind, there are two types of self-liberation: with effort and without effort. The first is that from the state of immovability in the nature of things, no matter what collection of afflictions and discriminations arises, it is determined and grasped by the insight of knowing the nature, and it does not move from its state. It is not bound by antidotes, nor does it follow after them. It is placed in this way because it is not established in this way on the basis of awareness. Therefore, just as water is clear when it is not turbid, it is clear without the miraculous nature of flowing change. Effortless is that the place of arising and the one who arises are of one taste. Dharma nature and discrimination are not established as two, essence and functional appearance. It arises and liberates itself, so whatever arises cannot stand. As the former said: These are the two levels of wisdom, namely, with effort and without effort. Effort is to remain in one's own place. For the measure of habitual appearances, the appearance of pure wisdom, self-arises greatly in all inner and outer. It is not born of conditions. No matter when they arise and change, they are liberated by abiding in their own place. Therefore, it is the appearance of yoga. Effortless ones are like this: one liberates oneself, in oneself, one is originally self-liberated. Just as iron shaves iron, just as stone breaks stone, oneself is the antidote to oneself. By realizing the self-nature of Dzogchen, whatever is accustomed in this way, one finds the meaning of resting without searching. Without meditating, great bliss increases, self

In suchness, directly realize. This (self-nature), whoever it encounters, even if they possess heinous sins, will be liberated through familiarity with this (self-nature), without any doubt. Thus it is said. Secondly, from the "String of Pearls": In the unobstructed awareness, because there is no confusion, there is no turning back. Because it is primordially liberated, it is utterly transcendent. Because it is self-liberated, objective conditions are exhausted. Because it is immediately liberated, appearances are purified. Because it is liberated at the limit, the four extremes cease. Because it is liberated as one, the many are emptiness. Thus, five categories are explained. First, the characteristic of primordial liberation is: Even in the center of the five aggregates and the eight consciousnesses' grasping, which is like clouds, the characteristic of awareness is like the sky, without inherent existence, so it completely abandons the burden of universally combining in existence. Because it is free from elaborations of self-identity, it is without fabrication or alteration, and because it exists as primordially liberated, it does not rely on effort or antidotal paths. As the "String of Pearls" says: It is not liberated by effort, but abides in liberation from the very beginning. And as the "Meaningful Diligence" says: The nature of mind that is primordially liberated, how could there be external conditions for liberation? Thus it is said. Then, why do sentient beings wander in samsara? O, you, with a beautiful face, intelligent one, you are the subject. The three doors are liberated in their own nature, but they are bound, and grasping at objects as knowable, grasping at the rope as an appearance, in this state of illusion, discriminating colors and shapes in external objects is form. Knowing the nature of its harm is feeling. The stream of consciousness that connects these before and after is perception. Not liberated from the conceptual thought of grasping at a snake is formation. The cause of all of these lords, the all-ground consciousness together with the afflicted mind, gathers, and from this, the dharma nature of awareness, primordially liberated, is not established in anything, looking between other and self and self. On the illusion of non-existence, grasping at form as real. The three realms have never existed from the beginning, but suddenly appear to you, who have vast knowledge. As it says in that (sutra): Thus, various appearances are like seeing a snake on a rope. Because of grasping at what is not that as that, the outer and inner, vessel and contents, are formed. Thus it is said. Therefore, the awareness of primordial liberation is not entrusted to the wind of the five senses' grasping, but abides without straying from the state of natural relaxation. As it says in that (sutra): The five elements themselves are primordially pure, liberated into the clarity of appearance. The five senses immediately
