Thus it is said. In this way, if the basis for explaining the tenets of Dzogchen is not determined, those who have great learning but little practice will disparage the aspect of skillful means, saying that it is a tenet, and thus accusations will be made against the nature of the Dharma of the noble path of non-conceptualization. Now, in order to establish the way the ground abides: Here, the dharmas of samsara and nirvana, do not move from the expanse, they do not become other. Samsara and nirvana are not established, and the nature of the ground is also complete in the three aspects of essence, nature, and compassion. Because of realizing this, Buddhahood has not arisen, so it does not move from the expanse. Because delusion has not become samsara, it has not become other. Although both are not established, that which has the magical quality of appearing as samsara and nirvana is the nature of essence, nature, and compassion. As it says in the Rangshar: Before I existed, the ground abided in this way. The ground is called Great Primordial Purity (ka dag chen po), and it abides in the three aspects of essence, nature, and compassion. The essence is unchanging wisdom, clear without ceasing, so it is called the abiding state of the youthful vase body. The appearance of the five lights of nature also does not cease. The appearance of compassion is like a cloudless sky. This is the basis for the arising of both samsara and nirvana, the actual cause, the sugatagarbha with ignorance, the purifying ground of the indestructible bindu-dhatu of all secret mantra practitioners, the nature of suchness with defilements. As it says in the Rangshar: The essence of that expanse is like the sky. The nature is naturally clear light. Compassion abides in the essence of awareness, and it becomes the basis for the arising of all qualities. Thus it is said. In that very nature, purity is Buddhahood, and impurity is sentient beings, the two aspects of samsara and nirvana. Like a dream that does not move in the state of sleep, it does not come from anywhere, nor does it transfer to anywhere else. Thereupon, from the nature of the ground itself, the ground appearance arises, the proximate cause of the eight aggregates of time, like clouds, is purified by itself, so it becomes Buddhahood. The ground appearance itself is obscured by coemergent ignorance, and by grasping the self-appearance of the totally imputed as an object, the two, grasper and grasped, proliferate, and the nature of samsara appears like a dream, so it becomes sentient beings. Although it appears as samsara and nirvana, like a dream during sleep does not move from the nature of sleep, it does not newly come from elsewhere.

And there is no transference to anywhere else, therefore it is called the basis of both samsara and nirvana. Here, the seven characteristics of the basis that are shown to be flawed, and the flawless self-existing basis of primordial purity are established as one's own tenet. Firstly, briefly, the various established tenets regarding the way the basis abides: primordial purity, self-arisen, uncertain, the meaning of certainty. It can be transformed into anything, and anything can be promised. All seven bases of various desires are also, in essence, aspects of the single primordial purity, and others hold their own tenets by separately assigning them. It is like the birth offering of an elephant by seven blind men, and describing the color of a swan. Here, the seven ways of asserting the basis according to the Great Perfection system are explained: asserting the basis as primordial purity, asserting the basis as self-arisen, asserting the basis as uncertain, asserting the basis as the actual basis of the meaning of certainty, asserting the basis as capable of being transformed into anything, asserting the basis as capable of being promised as anything, and asserting the basis as diverse. These are the seven. These seven are also assigned to the single awareness of the essence of primordial purity, each with its own reasonable basis. As it says in the Sixth Space: The basis of accomplishment that first descended, exists as one and not as something else. From the aspects that appear as delusion, when those who have realized have determined, it appears as a sequence of seven. The appearance of the sequence of seven is also from the way the essence of one appears. Because one is not known, it appears that way. However, the meaning of that is as follows: Abiding in self-perfection, it appears as the essence due to the gathering of various things. Abiding in uncertainty, it appears as various forms with moving mind. Abiding in certainty as one's own face, it appears as having memory and without change. Abiding in what can be transformed, it appears as the various forms of striving mind. Abiding in the essence of anything, whatever appears appears as one's own essence. Abiding in the variegated, it appears as various separate ways. Abiding in purity from the beginning, it appears as being without defilement from the beginning. All of these are sequences of mind, one's own nature is pure from the beginning. So it is. Therefore, firstly, it is unreasonable to assert that the basis is primordially pure, because the nature of primordial purity is free from elaboration and does not possess ignorance, therefore it is impossible for the delusion of samsara to arise from it. Because that basis itself cannot be the cause of ignorance. Ignorance is a sudden defilement,
