By means of the unsurpassed perfection that is not stolen by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, one attains the state of manifest eminence. Thus it is said. The method of meditating on equanimity: The nature of equanimity is to separate love and hatred. Cutting off bias and sectarianism, expanding equality itself. The three concepts of enemy, friend, and neutral. Apply equally to the object of benefit. Combine the forms of with-object and without-object with sequence. There are two aspects to this: measuring the meaning of equanimity, and equanimity focused on sentient beings. The former is a term for balancing both without distinguishing between good and bad, etc. For example, with regard to the eight worldly dharmas, if one does not rejoice and cling to the attainment of perfect enjoyment, then it is natural not to be discouraged if it diminishes or is not attained. This is equanimity in the equality of attainment and non-attainment. Similarly, if one does not develop excessive joy towards the side that offers reverence and honor, then because of the smallness of the clinging to rejection towards the side that is angry and strikes, there is equanimity towards pleasure and pain. If one's lineage, form, and qualities are praised and one becomes proud, then it is natural to be intolerant towards the side that exposes faults and slanders. The opposite of both of these is equanimity without joy or sorrow towards praise and blame. If one is happy when one's own qualities are known by others, or if they are heard by many people, or if one is depressed because they are not known, if neither of these exists, it is equanimity without joy or sorrow towards fame and obscurity. For one's own sake, if these eight dharmas are first balanced, then equanimity focused on sentient beings will also be easily accomplished, since eliminating bias is the characteristic of equanimity. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: You should have a mind that is mutually equal and impartial towards all sentient beings. Thus it is said. The aspect of focusing on sentient beings is: Just as samsara has no end, if one thinks of each sentient being, there is none who has not been an enemy and a friend, therefore it is not appropriate to have attachment and aversion towards them. The bias of enemy and friend either arises from the causes and conditions of interdependence in this present life, or from one's own conceptualization of holding to an enemy. One side sees as an enemy, while the other side has a mind of love.
