Training in emptiness, the essence of love and compassion, and the subsequent liberation is the unerring path to omniscience, as stated in the Stages of Meditation by Nagarjuna: "This dharma without essence arises entirely from conceptualization. Whatever is conceptualized is also empty. Thus, emptiness is liberation." So it is said. Thus, great compassion is the unerring cause of perfect Buddhahood. As stated in the sutra: "Whoever has a head has life. Whoever has compassion has bodhicitta. Whoever has bodhicitta has a Buddha." So it is said. However, compassion that is connected and continuous with the discrimination of near and far, friend and foe, is its very opposite. For individuals who easily generate compassion towards objects of equanimity, if they see unruly beings experiencing manifest suffering in this life, they often view them with hatred, saying, "This is not an object of compassion." If this is the case, the cause and effect of generating compassion will be destroyed. Even if beings falling into hell are seen accumulating the cause for it, they should still be objects of compassion. How could they not be objects? Because they did not fall there by chance. Therefore, one should generate enthusiasm for the benefits of compassion and train the mind in impartial compassion. By training in this way, the mind, free from harmful intent and attachment, will become workable. As stated in the Excellent Essence Sutra: "Great compassion makes the mind workable, harmless, and attains the supreme adorned with joy." So it is said. To explain the object and aspect of joy: The nature of joy is to rejoice in the other's perfect qualities, to cultivate good wishes for all beings with a joyful mind. Rejoicing in their attainment according to their own abilities, and wishing that they may never be separated from it in the future. There are three divisions of this. As stated in the Extensive Commentary on the Four Immeasurables: "Joy is the joy of beings possessing the abundance of wealth, the abundance of dharma, and the abundance of happiness. Joy that focuses on the perfection of one's own assembly is the meaning of rejoicing by focusing on one's own great assembly of virtue. Joy that focuses on the taste of the sacred dharma is the joy of oneself and others hearing the dharma."

The taste and, through finding the taste of thinking and meditating, is the meaning of joy. From that saying, here one should experience the initial meaning, for this, if one sees which sentient beings are happy and blissful, rich and possessing enjoyment, free from unfavorable sides, may this happiness and wealth be complete, may all kinds never be separated. Likewise, may all sentient realms be happy and complete. When will I experience the joy of seeing such a situation? Furthermore, if on top of this, there is longevity, freedom from illness, the arising of special virtuous thoughts, liberation from sinful thoughts, temporary enjoyment of the fruits of gods and humans, and ultimately possessing the bliss of all-knowing, how wonderful would that be! One should think like this. From the Twenty Thousand Verses, it says: If you see which sentient beings are rich with their own happiness, you should think like this: May they not be separated from this happiness. Transcending the happiness of gods and humans, may they possess the happiness of all-knowing. So it is said. In particular, for all those who have become the object of competitive mind and jealousy, just like cultivating loving-kindness, transforming the mind and learning to generate only good wishes, this is the antidote to the opposing side of joy. Incidentally, for the manifestation of my accumulated roots of virtue, and for the generation of wisdom from hearing, thinking, and meditating, one should also cultivate joy and strive to find ways to generate joy in the future. All of these, do not be bound by the rope of ultimate attachment, but should be regarded as the nature of illusion. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Magicians conjure up forms, creating various things such as horses, elephants, and chariots, but there is no real appearance in them, all dharmas should be known as such. Thus, for the sentient beings who are the object of joy, the virtue of conditioned things, and the three wisdoms, etc., one should also know that they are without appearance, of an illusory nature, and seal them with dedication. The benefits are: temporarily, because there is no jealousy and pain in one's own mind, one feels at ease, and peace is naturally achieved. Ultimately, the way to have great meaning. In the Eight Thousand Verses, it says: The one who rejoices with a joyful mind.
