No. Therefore, since we have entered the path of the Mahayana, all sentient beings are like blind people wandering in a terrifying wilderness. The eyes of acceptance and rejection are blind, separated from the guidance of virtuous friends, without the food and drink of generosity, having lost the escort of moral discipline, the dam of patience has collapsed, the steps of diligence are disordered, separated from the resting place of meditation, and merely abandoned by the wheel of wisdom. Some sentient beings are boiled and burned in the great hell, some are hungry and distressed in the city of pretas, some are tormented and exploited in the world of animals, some are fighting and contending in the realm of asuras, some are falling from the city of gods, and some are experiencing the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death in the human realm. Like this, all six types of beings have not been liberated from suffering, following after karma, tormented by intense afflictions, and actually or potentially accompanied by the fear of the lower realms. Some appear to be happy and prosperous now, but are actually engaging in the causes of suffering, delighting in non-virtuous actions; some are experiencing the results of suffering, tormented and distressed by the lower realms and so on. Therefore, by correctly observing the present behavior and future consequences of all sentient beings, who are as boundless as the sky, the source of compassion will surely manifest. One should not only see the love and compassion that desires separation from suffering and union with happiness, but also fail to see the necessity of cause and effect. Love is the mind without hatred, and compassion is the mind without attachment. Therefore, these two are confused in terms of the arising and the cause of arising. Here, for a beginner, one should first focus on the image of animals bound by hunters, livestock led to the slaughterhouse, people trapped in prisons, those tormented by leprosy, those oppressed by poverty, blind people without companions, and helpless beings, etc. In short, one should focus on those tormented by extremely heavy suffering, and strive to generate unbearable great compassion, which is easier. After becoming accustomed to this, gradually focus on all sentient beings.

One should focus their attention in this way. By relying on compassion with such a focus, one can bear the burden of the heightened intention to benefit others. For example, when a black antelope is chased by a hunter, it blows away with its nose the small creatures on its escape path that might be crushed under its hooves. This is the result of the power of habituated compassion increasing. Like this, compassion without taming one's own mind mistakes loving-kindness mixed with desire for compassion. Because partial loving-kindness is also present in eagles and wolves, as they cherish and protect their own offspring. Therefore, the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra states, "The vast mind endowed with great compassion is uncommon to all, including Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and should be cultivated." As it says, although these sentient beings are immersed in the flames of suffering, they do not know the means to escape from it. Entangled by hundreds of afflictions such as desire, and tormented by various kinds of wrong views, encountering a qualified guide who shows the path is as rare as the Udumbara flower. Even if they encounter a virtuous friend, they are obstructed by their own bad karma and various adverse conditions, so it is extremely difficult to truly embark on the path to liberation. Therefore, since none of these beings who are still wandering in the endless cycle of existence, tossed about by the waves of the ocean of suffering, have not been my parents and relatives in the past, abandoned by protectors and guardians, and entering the wrong path according to reason, may I deliver them from this! May they be liberated from suffering and constantly enjoy immeasurable happiness! Thinking this from the depths of one's heart, at that time, the suffering that befalls others is felt as if it were one's own burden, giving rise to unbearable compassion that brings tears and goosebumps. And engaging in actions that actually benefit others, such as saving the lives of others through body, speech, and wealth, and eliminating poverty, is a sign of compassion being jointly involved. However, while harming sentient beings in both thought and action, merely uttering words of compassion and accumulating hundreds of millions of bodhicitta aspirations is like a talking parrot. Thus, with focus and possessing
