Meditate on the unpleasant as being like the moderately pleasant, and then treat the very unpleasant as you would your parents. The object of such familiarization is that all sentient beings have, from beginningless time, been relatives such as parents. Such meditation should begin with just the people in one's own household, then gradually expand, and finally meditate on the limitless. As it is said. The measure of familiarization is that whatever sentient being one sees, one finds pleasing, abandons the thought of harming, and generates the thought of benefiting. Even when seeing those who are prosperous, one does not generate competitive or jealous thoughts, but rather thinks, 'May this person live longer than I, be free from illness, and have more wealth of Dharma,' and only thinks of benefiting them. As the Eight Thousand Verse states, 'Having cultivated and stabilized a mind of loving-kindness, one will find beings pleasing when one sees them. One will be without anger.' And, its benefits are, as stated in the Sutra of Great Liberation and Vastness, 'If one maintains pure morality in a pure world for one eon, it is not equal to the joy produced by a moment of cultivating loving-kindness. Therefore, loving-kindness is the most excellent. Those who, in this world, have committed evil deeds with body, speech, and mind, and are certain to fall into the three lower realms, loving-kindness will quickly liberate them.' And, in other sutras, it is said, 'Son of good family, making offerings without rising from the seat while meditating on the samadhi of loving-kindness will generate immeasurable merit.' Furthermore, there are eight great qualities. Master Aryadeva said, 'Gods and humans are pleased, and they are always protected. Poison and weapons cannot harm, the mind is happy and full of joy, one effortlessly accomplishes all things, and even if one does not attain liberation, one will be born in the Brahma realm. Therefore, one should cultivate these eight qualities of loving-kindness.' Thus it is said. In order to explain the distinctions of the object of compassion, the nature of compassion is the powerful mental strength of being unable to bear the suffering of others, seeing the cause and effect of the suffering of all six realms, and shedding tears due to unbearable pain. There are three types of compassion. Compassion focused on suffering sentient beings is compassion for sentient beings tormented by the three or eight natures of suffering.

Eliminating their suffering with the mind of great compassion; compassion directed towards sentient beings who commit misdeeds is to eliminate with compassion all the roots of non-virtue of those sentient beings who engage in non-virtue, which are the source of those three or eight sufferings; compassion directed towards sentient beings who are not liberated due to lacking the conditions is to benefit those sentient beings who have not met virtuous friends, have not heard the Dharma, and do not know what to accept and reject, and liberate them with compassion. Among these three, the first is the gateway for beginners, which is to take on the burden with the aim of wanting sentient beings to be free from suffering. If one does not take on the burden, but only thinks, "How wonderful it would be if sentient beings were free from suffering and met with happiness," then even Hearers and Solitary Realizers have such love and compassion. Therefore, here one must generate a higher intention characterized by courage, because that is the characteristic of the Great Vehicle. In the Questions of Sagaramati Sutra, it says: Sagaramati, for example, a merchant or householder has an only son, who is desired, loved, cherished, pleasing, and seeing him is never unpleasant. And that boy, while playing, falls into a pit of filth. Then, the boy's mother and relatives see that the boy has fallen into the pit of filth. Having seen this, they cry out loudly, lament, and wail, but they do not enter the pit of filth to take the boy out. Then, the boy's father goes to that place and sees his only son fallen into the pit of filth. Having seen this, with a sense of urgency, he is consumed with the desire to take out his only son, and without any disgust, he descends into the pit of filth and takes out his only son. Here, the pit of filth is analogous to the three realms, the only son is analogous to sentient beings, and the mother and relatives are analogous to the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who wail at the edge of the pit but cannot enter it. Although they have some compassion, they cannot eliminate the suffering of sentient beings. The courage of a Bodhisattva is like that of the father, who, with the power of altruism, can engage in benefiting others without protecting himself.
