The Bodhisattvas who abide in the four determinations of the practice ground, through the realm of their supernormal consciousness, see beings such as gods and humans, as well as beings suffering in the evil realms, and unbearable great compassion arises for them. Knowing that these beings and I have been wandering in samsara since beginningless time, and that there is no one who has not been a relative or friend to each other, they develop a mind of loving-kindness like a loving mother towards her only child. They manifestly aspire to find a way for them to be liberated from suffering and abide in happiness, and they make prayers for this purpose. This is called loving-kindness focused on sentient beings. Bodhisattvas from the first to the seventh bhumi think: All dharmas are without inherent existence, but sentient beings are attached to things as real, and therefore do not realize this, wandering in the three realms and experiencing the cause and effect of suffering. How sad! If only they could be benefited by the Dharma and realize the nature of reality. Making prayers in this way, with loving-kindness arising towards sentient beings through the manifest realization of the suchness of Dharma, is called loving-kindness focused on Dharma. Bodhisattvas from the eighth bhumi onwards, up to the attainment of Buddhahood, are said to have no object of focus. In a way that is spontaneously accomplished without conceptualization, they generate loving-kindness towards the realm of sentient beings and benefit them. For example, just as a wish-fulfilling jewel and a wish-fulfilling tree benefit sentient beings according to how they are prayed to, even though they have no conceptual thought, so too, through the power of the previous prayers of the Buddhas, great compassion naturally and spontaneously arises towards the realm of sentient beings. Therefore, it is called loving-kindness without an object of focus. Regarding these, the Bodhisattva-bhumi says: Loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is common to non-Buddhists. Loving-kindness focused on Dharma is common to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Loving-kindness without an object of focus is not common to any of them. Thus it is taught. Although this is so, the root of bearing the burden of the Great Vehicle is great compassion, as taught in the Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. Why is that?

Because if it is, it is because it precedes. Like the son of the Venerable Sharadvati, for example, breathing in and out is the precursor to the life force of a person. Similarly, the great compassion of a Bodhisattva is the precursor to the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle. So it is said. In the Holy Dharma Collection, it says: "World Honored One, Bodhisattvas should not study extremely many dharmas. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva can well hold and realize one dharma, all the Buddha's dharmas are in his hands. What is the one dharma? It is great compassion. World Honored One, with great compassion, all the Buddha's dharmas are in the palms of the Bodhisattvas. World Honored One, just as where the wheel jewel of a Chakravartin king is, all the armies are there. World Honored One, similarly, where the great compassion of a Bodhisattva is, all the Buddha's dharmas are. World Honored One, just as if the life force exists, other faculties will arise. World Honored One, similarly, if great compassion exists, other dharmas of the Bodhisattva will also arise." So it is said. Therefore, even if one experiences the mind of compassion once, it is easy to transform from everything to everything. Because the realms and inclinations of sentient beings are different, and their actions are evil, there are many difficulties and frustrations in the places to be learned, so there will be cases of falling into the Lesser Vehicle. As the master Ashvaghosa's "Essence of the Jewel Lamp of Bodhicitta Practice" says: "Some people do good deeds, but because they do not understand the meaning of detachment, like the pleasure of a dream realm, even if they obtain it for a while, they will lose it again." So it is said. Therefore, even if one obtains the mind of compassion once, one must generate joy and enter into the means of increasing it with many efforts. Why? Because the mind of enlightenment arises even from being truly held by others, and merely obtaining the name of a Bodhisattva, without having to strive, by the power of great compassion, one's own mind

Therefore, the Bhagavan declared from the Samadhi of the Tathagata's Wisdom Mudra that generating the mind of enlightenment is far more excellent than suppressing (afflictions). Therefore, the teacher Hero (Atisha) said: Your mind is a jewel, it is the seed of perfect enlightenment, Hero, only you know its essence, others cannot easily distinguish it. As it is said.
