Where does detachment and emptiness enter? By this, one cannot attain the supreme path. However, even if one only meditates on compassion, one will not be liberated from this cycle of existence. Whoever is able to combine these two will neither abide in cyclic existence nor abide in nirvana. Thus, it is taught in the teachings of the noble Inexhaustible Intellect: What is the method of a Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? For what reason, when in meditative equipoise, does one look upon sentient beings, and thereby place the mind near the object of great compassion? That is the method. For what reason does one enter into peace and complete peace? That is wisdom. And so on, it is extensively taught, in accordance with the teachings in the chapter on subduing Mara. Having thus identified the characteristics of the path, from what does the ritual of combining them arise? Although some believe that it arises from four conditions, such as seeing the qualities of the Form Body and Dharma Body of the Buddha, and regarding the Mahayana teachings as rare, here, for beginners, it arises from first making the four immeasurables like a foundation, and then from the two, aspiration and engagement, and from learning the precepts. As it is said in the Intermediate Mother Sutra: "Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should meditate on great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity." Thus it is. In general, the meaning of the word "immeasurable" is shown to have four aspects: The teacher Buddhagupta said: "Thus, it is directed towards immeasurable sentient beings, immeasurable accumulations, immeasurable Dharma, and immeasurable wisdom." The first is that one cannot estimate how many sentient beings there are in the three realms. The second is the two aspects of merit and wisdom, which are the cause or essence of generation. The third is the great qualities of the Buddha, such as the ten powers and the four fearlessnesses. The fourth is that knowable objects and knowledge are inseparable, and thus become the object of the Tathagata's wisdom. The four qualities, such as love, abide in the essence of these. Among these, in order to explain the aspects of the object of love, the essence of love is the desire for others' happiness. Just as a loving mother cares for her child, one accumulates body, possessions, and all virtues, and trains to benefit others and endure harm. Among these, love is faith.
