The number cannot be expressed either. Rather than repaying kindness, each excellent mark has hundreds of thousands of supreme excellent marks. Furthermore, regarding the merit of all sentient beings and the distinct greatness of each of the Tathagata's names and excellent marks, it is stated in that very sutra: If all the merit of all sentient beings were gathered and piled up, it would be equal to one mark of a hair of the Tathagata. If all the merit of all the pores were gathered and piled up, it would be equal to one excellent mark. If the merit of all the excellent marks were multiplied by a hundred, it would be equal to one mark, except for the white hair mark between the eyebrows and the invisible crown of the head. If all other marks were multiplied by a thousand, they would become the two marks mentioned above. If the merit of the thirty-two marks and the eighty excellent marks were gathered and piled up and multiplied by ten million trillion, it would be equal to the Tathagata's voice, which is like the sound of a dragon, deep and far-reaching. From that sound, it spreads through immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable Buddha-fields, as many as fine dust particles, and because it practices great love and compassion for the benefit of sentient beings, it is grateful, repaying kindness, and repaying kindness. This is inconceivable. The meaning of ultimately praising the excellent qualities of speech through such descriptions should also be understood, because speech reveals the truth of the path of cessation and abides in the nature of all things. Even ordinary beings bound by all bonds can recognize their parents in future lives and strive to repay their kindness with love and compassion. And that repayment is the unerring cause of placing them on the state of Buddhahood through the wheel of the sacred Dharma, based on one's own unerringly attained state. Therefore, the nature of speech is all-pervasive, whether it is the number of sentient beings abiding in the world, or various types of learners, ordinary beings, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and great wise ones.

Even though those with merit ask different questions at the same time, (the Buddha) has the characteristic of answering with a single voice that matches each person's disposition, faculties, and level of merit. In the chapter on the Truthful One, it says: "Here, all the definitive words of sentient beings, when many ask at the same time, understanding in a single moment of mind, he answers each separately with a single voice." Also, from the King of Samadhi Sutra: "The benefit of the world, from your one voice, sounds arise according to different inclinations, each thinking, 'The Buddha has taught me.'" Thus, the reason for the definitive meaning is this: sound and words do not inherently exist, but rather, the inclinations of those to be tamed, the blessings of the Buddha, and the timely gathering of the three conditions combine to manifest in the consciousness of the individual. In the Inconceivable Secret Sutra, it says: "Tranquil Wisdom, when the Bhagavan said, 'Kauṇḍinya, the eye is impermanent,' those who were tamed by suffering heard, 'The eye is suffering.' Those who were tamed by selflessness heard, 'The eye is selfless.' Those who were tamed by emptiness heard, 'The eye is emptiness.' Those who were tamed by peace heard, 'The eye is peace.' Those who were tamed by solitude heard, 'The eye is solitude.' Those who were tamed by impermanence heard, 'The eye is impermanent.'" Like that. Therefore, the ultimate definitive meaning is that the nature of the Buddha is the Dharmakaya, so one should not regard sound and the sound existing in letters as inherently existent. As it says in the Jewel Heap Sutra: "Tranquil Wisdom, from the time I attained complete enlightenment at night until the time I passed into nirvana at night, I have not taught even a single word of Dharma." If one can understand the scope of the meaning of what was said, then the mind's eye will be widened towards the source and nature of the Dharma, like the ocean of the Buddha's words and treatises, as it says in the Uttaratantra: "Just as the sound of a lute, arises from the consciousness of another, without conceptualization and without fabrication, so too the speech of the Tathagata, arises from the consciousness of another, not abiding within or without."
