Or, when an unfocused mind arises, from mindfulness, among all the concepts of meditation, the impermanence section, the prophecy section, the verse section, the specially spoken section, the story section, the realization narration section, the thus-happened section, the birth story section, the extremely vast section, the wonderful Dharma section, and the definitive display section, whatever is taught to the Bodhisattvas, the Bodhisattva should listen well, hold well, recite fluently, contemplate well with the mind, and deeply understand through observation. Then, dwelling alone in a secluded place, with proper attention, those Dharmas that have been well contemplated should be remembered with the mind. With whatever mind one remembers, that mind should continuously remember within. Thus, one can remember. Having entered in this way and dwelling in it many times, the resulting extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind is called quiescence (shamatha). Thus, the Bodhisattva seeks perfect quiescence. Having obtained extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, he dwells in it, abandoning mental distraction. For those Dharmas that have been contemplated, within, he makes the object of samadhi appear as an image, separately perceiving and generating conviction. In this way, for the image of the object of samadhi, discriminating the meaning of what is to be known, fully understanding, fully examining, enduring, desiring, distinguishing, viewing, and realizing, this is called insight (vipassana). Thus, the Bodhisattva is skilled in insight. As it was said. In this way, the insight of equipoise on the worldly path, although it is the nature of separate perception, when the equipoise of directly realizing the nature of reality, the self-aware wisdom of each individual arises in the continuum, it is the attainment of the supramundane state of the noble ones. Therefore, it enters into abandoning the obscurations to knowledge, and its nature is from the Sutra of Golden Light: 'From rubbing two sticks together, fire arises; the fire that arises burns itself.'

Similarly, after the power of wisdom arises, the one who arises burns that very thing. Thus, from the wisdom of individually discriminating the signless quiescence, the non-conceptual wisdom of signless vipassanā arises, which is the view of the master Nāgārjuna and his spiritual sons. Therefore, unerring individual discriminating wisdom is considered to burn all the firewood of conceptualization, like fire. As the glorious Dīpaṃkara also said: In the fire of individual discrimination, burn all virtuous conceptualizations. Moreover, just as when what is to be burned is consumed, what burns also does not remain, so too, in the nature of samāhita, when the light of the non-conceptual wisdom of vipassanā shines, conceptual thoughts of attention do not enter. Just as the fire that consumes what is to be burned, does not remain after what is to be burned is consumed. It is considered that all the phenomena of wandering are the firewood of the fire of consciousness. If they are burned by the fire of such discrimination, they will become pacified. And, entering all at once, like this, the past This, while coexisting with everything, is harmed by the power of ignorance. The fault of not contemplating the supreme Dharma, the method of liberation from this harm, is like the experience of many learned ascetics and Brahmins in the lineage of generations. This is clearly shown by the very sūtra of "Admonishing the King": Great King, for example, great mountains from four directions, solid, stable, endowed with essence, indestructible, uncracked, extremely hard, without gaps, densely piled up, touching the sky and pressing down on the earth, grinding into powder all grasses, trees, resins, branches, leaves, and all sentient beings, and coming, it is not easy to avert this, whether by fleeing quickly, or by resisting with strength, or by accomplishing with wealth, or by averting with substances, mantras, and medicines. Great King, similarly, these four great fears will come: which four? Aging, sickness, death, and decay. Great King, aging destroys youth and comes. Sickness destroys health and comes. Decay destroys all perfections and comes. Death destroys life and comes. From these, whether by quickly
