will decay. Great King! Thus, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, and they are unstable. As it is said, in general, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, especially the life of a person is impermanent, and in particular, the basis of the connection between body and mind is unstable. The villages, towns, and monasteries that once flourished and prospered have become empty and dilapidated. For example, one's own body is like a village and town, and the mind is the master of those. One should contemplate well the characteristic of the basis and the dependent both disappearing. One's own dwelling and houses will also gradually decay, eventually becoming a foundation where even birds cannot build nests. Without needing to wait long, a sudden death will take away the appearance of this world, embark on the path of the afterlife, lie at the end of the bed, enjoy the last meal, and not know who will say the last words. One should be saddened by the moment of leaving alone from the midst of relatives, wealth, and friends, as the master Ashvaghosa said: Death cannot be avoided, and when all methods are ineffective, do not increase happiness, what is there to do like a fish in water? On earth or in heaven, have you not seen, heard, or doubted that some who were born have not died? Thus it is said. Fourth, contemplate various examples and meanings, in order to manifest the latent impermanence. People tormented by the heat of Soka rejoice in the bright autumn moon, and a hundred days and nights pass by their lives, but they do not fear in their hearts the place where they are. Thus it is said. Like this, most people are accustomed to reckless actions without thinking, so they naturally die suddenly without any thought of death. In the Collection of Special Discourses, it says: The person who first enters the womb will not increase but only decrease, and cannot return from the time that has passed. In the morning, many people are seen, but in the afternoon, some are not seen. Thus it is said. If, due to various accidental factors, one eventually becomes convinced of the law of gradual death, then from the moment of birth, due to the control of karma, however long the lifespan is, it will not increase even a little, and it will suddenly decrease.

Because there are so many factors that lead to a short life, such as enjoying and indulging in non-virtuous activities like killing. Even if life is that long, it passes like having nowhere to land, like a hawk flying in the sky, or like rapid water flowing down a steep cliff, not stopping for a moment, a short time, or a brief instant. In this situation, because consciousness is obscured, even a little sunshine in the autumn season is annoying, and one longs for and envies the cool and comfortable autumn weather. Those people do not realize that during this time, hundreds of days and nights have shortened their lives. As it says in "Words on Impermanence": "When the cool autumn moon and wind arrive, the season has come, all sentient beings say, 'My life will end,' and there is no one who does not deeply hate it." Similarly, one grieves for the death of others, but does not think that the Lord of Death is right in front of oneself. Therefore, one engages in large-scale construction for permanent residence, launches large-scale wars, occupies new lands, plunders children, and undertakes large construction projects, like bees only caring about accumulating wealth, causing the body, speech, and mind to feel exhausted. This is unreasonable grief. As it says in "Words on Impermanence": "For beings who have entered the path of karma, sentient beings without increase or decrease, those who have passed away without fault, why should one grieve for this? Since he will eventually die, who else can avoid death? This is a major event that has occurred, one should wail loudly. For all living things, death is in front of them, everything is a manifestation of change, therefore one should not grieve for this." Therefore, when seeing the scene of others passing away, one should not just be bewildered, but should prepare oneself for death. Even the Bodhisattvas of the three realms are taught to practice impermanence, let alone ordinary people. It is useless to just hear the words of impermanence. Even for the corpse of a dead dog, one should deeply reflect: it died because it had birth, I have already been born, what choice is there other than death? At the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma can help oneself, this clear understanding must always be maintained. Once this unfeigned view of impermanence arises in the mind, the happiness and fame of this life
