That great death, like a constant wheel, is invisible; for death, day and night, even in an instant, are drawing closer. As it is said in the Sutra of Advice to the King: "Great King, for example, a lion enters a herd of deer, seizes the prey, and dominates them as he pleases. Those deer, unable to withstand its great power, become helpless. Great King, similarly, the axe of the Lord of Death fells, causing one to lose fatness, without a protector, without refuge, without relatives, without friends, joints separating and breaking, flesh and blood drying up, the body tormented by disease, thirst unquenched, countenance changing, limbs trembling, unable to stand, without strength, saliva, mucus, urine, and vomit covering the body. The senses of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind cease to function, hiccups arise, the first groans are uttered, and doctors abandon treatment. Medicines, food, and drink are all refused, preparing to go to the next life, lying on the final bed, sinking into the cycle of birth, old age, and death without beginning, with only a slight breath remaining. Terrified and frightened by Yama, falling into despair, breathing ceases, mouth and nose open, teeth clench, begging for alms, entering from one karmic existence to another, alone, without companions, abandoning this world, going to the next. The great being is lifted up, enters into great darkness, falls into a great abyss, enters into a dense thicket, goes to a great solitude, is carried into a great ocean, driven by the wind of karma, going to a directionless place, entering a great battlefield, seized by a great demon, weeping in the sky. Father, mother, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters surround him, breath ceases, saying to divide the wealth, crying out: Alas, my father! Alas, my mother! Alas, my child! Hair disheveled, only generosity, asceticism, and Dharma become friends, except for Dharma

There is no other refuge. There is no other protector, no other support. Great king, at that time, in that era, the Dharma will become an island, a refuge, a protector, and a teacher. Great king, at such a time, while lying in your bed, experiencing the visions of the afterlife and falling into the lower realms, a sense of fear for your situation will arise. At that time, nothing other than the Dharma can become a refuge. Great king, even though your body is so completely protected and well-nurtured, it will still face the moment of death. Great king, even though your body is washed, anointed, fumigated with incense, and adorned with fragrant flowers, it will ultimately be devoured by demons and emit an unpleasant odor. Great king, even though you are clothed in fine garments of Kashmiri cloth and silk, when you lie on your deathbed, you will still die wearing dirty clothes and depart alone and naked. Great king, even though you are delighted by the pleasures of various desires, you will ultimately abandon them all and die without satisfaction. Great king, even though you are in your home, possessing incense, flowers, silk curtains, cushions, and various garments, and lying on a bed with pillows on either side, you will ultimately be abandoned in a great charnel ground filled with crows, foxes, and repulsive corpses, lying motionless on the ground. Great king, even though you ride on elephants and horses, enjoying the delightful and pleasing sounds of music, feeling happy, raising banners and parasols, and being praised with sweet words by kings, ministers, and friends, and walking under their gaze, before long you will die in your bed, be carried by four people, and your parents and siblings will raise their hands, beat their chests, and weep with sorrow, then be carried out of the city's south gate, either buried in a wilderness cemetery, or devoured by vultures, crows, and foxes, or have those bones burned in a fire, or thrown into water, or buried underground. Even so, they will be ground into powder by the wind, sun, and rain, and scattered in all directions.
