Or to escape, or to prevent with strength, or to deceive with wealth, it is not easy to pacify with objects and mantras, and medicines. Thus, Licchavi Vimala Kirti also said to his friends, this body is so impermanent, so unstable, so unreliable, so weak, so meaningless, so perishable, so short-lived, so painful, so full of diseases, so subject to change. Friends, this body is a container of many diseases, and the wise should not dwell on it. Friends, this body is completely unbearable, like a bubble. This body will not last long, like a bubble on water. This body arises from the existence of afflictions, like a mirage. This body is meaningless, like the trunk of a banana tree. Thus it is said. Then, clearly showing the characteristics of the separation of the body and mind aggregate, thereby arousing renunciation: When defeated on the battlefield of Yama, one falls into the abyss of losing refuge and support. The vitality of life and the senses are completely abandoned, and medicines and doctors also flee from it. The limbs are exhausted from moving, and the breath is involuntarily shaken and increased by force. Even if surrounded by relatives and friends and grieving, one cannot be retained, and one loses the stability like an iron hook. The flow of that breath, like the hair of a horse's tail, is cut off by the sharp enemy axe of the Lord of Death. Flaunting teeth that have lost their beauty, one enters the thick darkness of karmic power. Alas, the aggregate of conditioned phenomena is defeated on the battlefield of Yama, just as a Chandala in Gagana, after killing a buffalo, stuffs its large pieces of meat deep inside, there is no escape. Even the powerful Vajrapani cannot be a refuge and support. The beauty of youth, which is always respectfully served, fades like a flower struck by frost. The order of the collection of elements, the function of the five senses is extinguished like a candle in the wind. For the pain of explaining the key points, medicine cannot cure, so the nurturer, even when present, can only helplessly look at the light and want to escape. The supporting wind weakens, so the essence cannot support the limbs either.

When the function of the wind malfunctions, breathing focuses solely on exhaling. Close and related people surround from all directions, and even if hundreds and thousands of painful sighs are exhaled, it cannot be stopped. The stacked and layered breaths become weaker and weaker, and in the instant that the merciless Lord of Death devours with an enemy knife as sharp as a razor, the teeth, even more repulsive than the extremely ugly face of a flesh-eater, are approaching. Obtaining a world of good rebirth is so difficult, and suffering is like this. Like this, the waves of tears are showing that the situation of going to the next world is unbearable, and thinking about it again and again, from all aspects, will: first, be the cause of entering the Dharma; in the middle, be the condition for practicing the Dharma; and finally, be the companion for experiencing the clear light realm of death. In the past, in Rājagṛha (རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ་), there was a householder named Palgye (དཔལ་སྐྱེས་), who lived to be a hundred years old and was weary of samsara, so he asked the Blessed One to ordain him, and the Blessed One granted him permission. Maudgalyāyana (མཽངྒལ་གྱི་བུ་) ordained him, and as a result, he became someone who knew the Three Pitakas. Because he was too old, he was weary of the impermanent Dharma and jumped into the water. Maudgalyāyana rescued him and taught him the Dharma, and as a result, he attained the state of an Arhat. Therefore, the Blessed One said: If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is as if you have made offerings to all the Buddhas. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the breath of all the Buddhas. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the prophecy of all the Buddhas. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the blessing of all the Buddhas. For example, among all the footprints, the footprint of an elephant is the best. Similarly, among all the meditative concepts of Buddhists, only the concept of meditating on impermanence is the best. Therefore, those Bodhisattvas who are engaged in the welfare of others will also cultivate this path of subsequent attainment. All the activities of ordinary people are mixed with the impermanent Dharma. The Hundred Karmas Sutra says: At all times and in all places, one should remember the Lord of Death. And the Bodhicaryāvatāra says: Day and night, I should always think of this alone; there is nothing else.
