So, dedicating oneself to practicing the Dharma is not necessarily limited to those who are ordained. As it was said before, "Since it is so, in order to attain the noble Four Noble Truths, I will constantly strive. Even householders who possess wealth can, through wisdom, transcend the river of afflictions." This means that even those who are householders and kings, like Gzugs can snying po (Embodied Essence), can transcend the river of afflictions by understanding the Four Noble Truths. Therefore, this noble path is achieved through individual effort. It is not as if one is born with all the knowledge and then descends from the sky, nor does it sprout from the ground like crops. So, even ordinary beings should rely on virtuous friends, strive to transcend the river of afflictions, and not be afraid. This is what the noble Nagarjuna taught. As he said, "Those who manifest the Dharma did not fall from the sky like crops, nor did they sprout from the ground. Before, they were ordinary beings afflicted by afflictions." However, those who do not maintain mindfulness will cling to suffering as happiness, to impermanence as permanence, to non-self as self, and to impurity as purity, thus generating four inverted perceptions and creating the causes for bad rebirths and samsara. As it was said before, "Those who do not maintain mindfulness will have four inverted perceptions, which are the root of destruction." If there is no such "self" that clings in this way, then who will experience the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions? The view that the nature of "self" is the nature of form, etc., should be refuted. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend, "Form is not self, I am not connected to form, I am not in form, form is not in me, and the other four aggregates should also be realized as empty in the same way." Therefore, "I" is not the essence of form, etc., because if "I" were the same as form, etc., then "I" would also become impermanent like form, etc. If it is thought that "I" is different from form, etc., then there are three ways to analyze this: Is it connected to form, etc., like a person riding a buffalo? Or is it located on top of form, etc., like a mongoose sitting on the grass?

Is it so? Furthermore, like clinging vines and kudzu vines and so forth, which are dependent, clearly and distinctly, the objects of dependence such as form, etc., to that, reasoning is stated: What dominion do I have over form, etc.? Just as with the dominion over tending and milking herds of buffalo, it (I) does not have the ability to abandon or take up form, etc., as it pleases. Even unwillingly, because of seeing the fearfulness of form, etc., therefore I am not one who possesses form. The meaning of the second aspect: How can it be said that this (I) abides in form, etc.? For non-material dharmas, like a caretaker sitting on a fresh patch of grass, it is not possible to abide above and below. Because of what? Those things that are manifestly abiding, even the self abiding in them does not bestow even the slightest benefit upon form, etc., and form, etc., is the same for it. Furthermore, this (I) rides upon it and enters into them, for example, riding on an elephant, like an elephant, that is also not possible, because even unwillingly, entering and withdrawing are seen. I do not have the ability to enter or withdraw from form, etc., as I please. The reasoning for the third aspect is: Clinging vines, etc., rely on the earth, and because of relying on it, the arising, abiding, and increasing of form, etc., are seen. The non-arising of form, etc., does not depend on me in that way, because even when I do not exist, external form, etc., exists in its own place. According to whose views, like grass, etc., which are living things, salt, etc., are uncertain. Thus, destroying the twenty kinds of views of the aggregates, this is the essential point of the oral instructions, therefore here it is established according to the manner of the Indian treatises. Therefore, form is not self, I am not one who possesses form, I do not abide in form, form does not abide in me, likewise, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, these four should also be known to be empty, destroying the twenty high peaks of the mountain of views of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, it is called obtaining the fruit of stream-entry. Why are they called noble truths? Because noble ones, stream-enterers, etc., see them as truth.
