If one is separated from loving and beneficial parents, or from beloved friends, remembering their merits, actions, and demeanor, the asceticism of suffering with a very painful heart is even longer in its karmic consequences than walking on a dangerous path bound by the net of attachment to the young maiden Norzang Yaksha. As it says in the Wish-Fulfilling Tree: "Those beings who cherish the taste of external objects, tormented by all kinds of ignorance, alas, it is rare to turn away from the comfort of home with a sense of renunciation." And: "The particles of dust attached to the rainbow, harmful, joyless, and difficult to endure, are certainly difficult to reverse, deceived by all kinds of transformations." And: "That helpless, deer-eyed one, like a swan entering the water's edge, is she wailing and sleepless in that pavilion?" Because the asceticism and suffering burned by the fire of attachment are extremely difficult to endure. This is what is said. Threatened by the suffering of being deprived of desire: Those who are deprived of desire and impoverished, due to hunger and thirst, unfulfilled wishes, and hopes and doubts, are entirely dominated by others, their bodies and speech barely surviving, the suffering is like real hungry ghosts wandering on the earth. As long as there is no sense of contentment and no renunciation arises from the faults of desire, then being bound to the world by the hope and doubt of unfulfilled wishes is the natural law. The poor and lowly are extremely distressed in terms of food, clothing, and shelter, and cannot even protect their parents, children, and relatives. On top of that, they pay taxes, rent, and wages to make a living, enduring the suffering of their bodies and speech barely surviving, and still do not do anything to change this situation, just as it was said earlier: "Like being quickly destroyed by a stone, people grieve in suffering, but they do not act to prevent that fierce poverty from recurring." Now, in order to show that the basis of all these sufferings is the five aggregates of appropriation, it is said: Form relies on substance, feeling is known by its nature, consciousness continues from this, action creates seeds for the future, and consciousness is the appropriation of experiencing suffering. These five aggregates are the source, basis, and container of all sufferings, the cause of everything.

Having known the true nature of all dharmas, one should abandon the karma and afflictions that produce all dharmas. Thus, form or the perception of form is the root of all suffering. Feeling discriminates its nature. Perception connects like a chain, thus continuing constantly. Formation creates the seeds of all future suffering. Consciousness completely grasps everything. As it is said in the "Mother Sutra": "Good son, the five aggregates of grasping, because they are with outflows, are the place of all suffering, the root of all suffering, the source of all suffering." Therefore, having arisen aversion to the nature of samsara, which is the truth of suffering of birth as the characteristic of the five aggregates of grasping, one should abandon the truth of the origin, that is, the desire that arises in existence and craves existence, that feels joy and happiness in it, and all the non-virtuous dharmas born of karma and afflictions that are associated with existence and manifest joy. Having abandoned them in this way, the practitioner of the middle path, riding the chariot of the four noble truths, realizes the truth of cessation, enters the state of nirvana, and attains the supreme state of liberation. Having said this, the cessation of the cause of arising is liberation, and liberation must depend on the truth of the path, as it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Birth is suffering, called craving, this is its vast origin, its cessation is liberation, the noble eightfold path can attain liberation." That is, right view, the wisdom without outflows; right livelihood, abandoning flattery and wrong livelihood; right effort, that is, diligence, which is the four right abandonments; right mindfulness, not forgetting the object, that is, the four mindfulnesses of body, feeling, mind, and dharma; right concentration, that is, the four dhyanas; right speech, that is, the four virtuous paths of action; right action, that is, the three natures of abandoning the non-virtuous paths of action of the body; right thought, that is, harmless mind and many virtuous thoughts. Thus, by realizing these four noble truths, one can attain nirvana.
