I! Whoever wishes to protect themselves should not examine the behavior of others, nor should they judge them, saying, "This is like this, that is like that." One should diligently engage in the Buddha's teachings day and night. And so on, it is stated in the scriptures. In the *Condensed Sutra*, it says: "Manjushri, the obscuration of the karma of abandoning the true Dharma is minor. Regarding the teachings spoken by the Tathagata, some perceive them as good, and some perceive them as bad; this is abandoning the Dharma. Whoever abandons the Dharma, by abandoning the Dharma, is slandering the Tathagata and speaking ill of the Sangha. If one says, 'This is in accordance with the Dharma, this is not in accordance with the Dharma,' this is abandoning the Dharma. If one says, 'This was spoken for the Bodhisattvas, this was spoken for the Shravakas, this was spoken for the Pratyekabuddhas,' this is abandoning the Dharma." Like this authoritative statement of प्रमाण (pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण, valid cognition), I have not seen many who do not contradict it, except for this venerable one. Seventh, incidentally, the manner of expanding the great accumulation of merit from various aspects: Nowadays, we have reached the end of the five degenerations of the evil age. The teachings of the Sage, both scriptural and realized, are merely practiced in form only. At this time, most of those who are known as spiritual friends who uphold the teachings also place less importance on the activities of hearing, contemplating, and meditating. Regardless of whether they have the intention to benefit the unbiased Buddhadharma and to transform all beings into fields of merit, they engage in activities that create superficial wonders and clamor, such as building temples, statues, stupas, dance costumes, etc., in a way that they compete with each other. Some, who are even worse, completely abandon the activities of hearing, contemplating, and meditating for the sake of merely maintaining the foundation of their respective monasteries. They spend their entire lives chasing after wealth, but they can only satisfy the demands of the local officials. Besides that, they are constantly immersed in worldly lawsuits and disputes, like pouring water into sand, without any benefit to the flourishing of the teachings. Moreover, they never have enough resources, etc., which seems to be a common trend. However, this venerable one dedicated his entire life to accomplishing the benefit of the Dharma and beings through the nine virtuous practices, such as hearing, contemplating, and meditating.
