Having seen and heard a little, based on that, in the truly joyful great garden of Orgyen Mindrolling, it is recorded in an extremely concise manner and disseminated widely. May the assembly of faults be dispelled by the sacred wisdom vision. Sarva Da Kalyanam Bhava Tu. May all times be auspicious) This is the chapter on the detailed explanation of the twelve qualities of asceticism. Homage to Shakyamuni! In general, there are twelve qualities of asceticism, divided into three aspects of food, three aspects of clothing, and six aspects of dwelling. The three aspects of food are: begging for alms, eating in one sitting, and not taking food later. The first can be divided into begging for alms with contentment and begging for alms in sequence, thus the qualities of asceticism become thirteen. The three aspects of clothing are: wearing three Dharma robes, wearing felt robes, and wearing rag robes. The six aspects of dwelling are: living in a hermitage, living under a tree, living in an unroofed place, living in a cemetery, constantly squatting, and living wherever one is. Some consider the latter two as aspects of conduct, so they say there are only four aspects of dwelling. So, what are the individual natures of these? Begging for alms with contentment is: eating as much as one gets from familiar households. Begging for alms in sequence is: going through each household in order, eating as much food as one gets, and not walking away haughtily thinking, "I have obtained good food and drink from here." Eating in one sitting is: sitting in one place and eating as much as one eats, not getting up and eating again. Not taking food later is: sitting down for food and not stopping until one has taken all the food that sustains one's life, or taking it all at once thinking, "This is enough to sustain me." Wearing three Dharma robes is: sustaining oneself with the three Dharma robes of Sanghati, Uttarasanga, and Antarvasa, and not carrying more clothes than that. Wearing felt robes is: carrying all three Dharma robes or one extra robe, all made of wool, and not carrying other clothes. Wearing rag robes is: not wearing clothes that have been discarded on roads and other places, and have been touched by excrement and urine.
