In order to abandon attachment, one should adhere to using only one seat and not accepting leftover food. Regarding clothing, it is also necessary to adhere to the three robes. To abandon attachment to excessive clothing, one should adhere to the three Dharma robes. To abandon attachment to soft and comfortable clothing, one should adhere to wearing felt clothes. To avoid attachment to good clothes, one should adhere to wearing tattered clothes. Regarding dwelling places, it is also necessary to adhere to six practices. To abandon attachment to hustle and bustle, one should live in monasteries. To abandon attachment to dwelling places, one should live under trees, in open spaces, and in cemeteries – these three. Living in cemeteries is also for abandoning attachment to sexual activity. To abandon attachment to the comfort of lying down, one should sit upright. To counteract attachment to spreading out mats and hiding, one should abide as is. What are the benefits of adhering to these twelve qualities of asceticism? There are two types of explanations: general and specific. Firstly, adhering to these ascetic practices has benefits because one can gradually abandon fame, gain, respect, pretense, quarrels, accumulation, attachment, hatred, and so on. One can be content with just meager food, clothing, and dwelling, abide in the lineage of the noble ones, reduce possessions, and have the benefit of being praised by the Buddhas and Shravakas. Secondly, a mendicant has no pride, can endure insults, will not lack food, and will not experience the suffering of seeking delicious food. Using only one seat also avoids the faults of seeking a second meal and repeatedly giving and receiving. Moreover, what is eaten is easily digested, the harm is small, rising is easy, and one dwells in comfort. Not accepting leftover food allows one to be content, not be attached to food, avoid the fault of repeatedly seeking food, and not hinder meditation and reading. Having three Dharma robes eliminates the suffering of seeking extra Dharma robes, one does not transgress even if holding clothes for more than ten days, there is no action of blessing extra clothes, one can reduce possessions, and it is suitable for yogic practice.

And subsequently, there are consistent benefits. For the felt-wearer, because they are not greedy for good clothes, there is no suffering of seeking clothes, and relying on it, they can endure harm from rain, cold, heat, etc., having such benefits. For the rag-wearer, because they do not mingle with householders for the sake of clothes, thieves will not look for opportunities, there is no suffering of guarding clothes, wherever they go they will not be bound by clothes, and they have the benefit of not being defiled by the fault of wrong livelihood. For those who live in solitude, living in the hustle and bustle of the city, they cannot attain samadhi and cannot protect it; abandoning the hustle and bustle and abiding in solitude, they can attain samadhi and can protect it; they have the benefit of clearly tending towards virtue, and dying without regret. For those who live under trees, there is no suffering of seeking a dwelling, there is no basis for arguing with others, relying on the seasonal changes of branches and leaves of trees, they realize the impermanence of conditioned phenomena, and they have the benefit of not being attached to a dwelling and wandering without hindrance. For those without a roof, there is no suffering of seeking a dwelling, hiding, and cleaning, relying on the movement of the stars, they realize the impermanence of conditioned phenomena, and so on, having such benefits. For those who live in cemeteries, by meditating on impermanence and impurity in the cemetery, they will not generate uncontrolled desires such as greed, and they will reduce attachment to body and life, thereby having the benefit of abandoning the arrogance based on this. For those who always sit and do not lie down, they will not be controlled by sleep and comfort, and they will reduce attachment to the body, it is easy to get up and have few dreams, and they have the benefit of reducing the affairs of seeking and decorating a dwelling. For those who abide anywhere, once they are content with laying down a mat as they please, therefore there is no suffering of seeking a dwelling, they are not attached to a dwelling, and they have the benefits of few desires and contentment, etc. So, from where are these qualities of practice obtained? The Treasury of Knowledge says: 'Not from other arrogance, from receiving and respect.' Just as it is obtained from receiving from a bhikshu. How is the method? That place...
