Merely a name without form or color. Fifth, the six sense bases: If born from a womb, the six sense bases, such as the eyes and ears, are formed from the initial coagulation of consciousness, sperm, and blood, and the gradual growth of names. The sense bases of body and mind already exist. If born miraculously, the sense faculties of miraculous birth are accomplished simultaneously, without such a sequence. For egg-born and moisture-born beings, it is said that apart from the womb, the other aspects are similar to womb-born beings. Sixth, contact: Based on the convergence of object, faculty, and consciousness, with respect to objects such as form, there arise three types: agreeable, disagreeable, and neutral. The first mental factor that arises is the one that completely determines any of these three. Accordingly, there are various types of contact arising from the convergence of the eye to the mind. Seventh, feeling: Corresponding to whichever of the three objects has been determined by contact, any of the three contaminated feelings of pleasure, pain, or equanimity arises. This also exists as before. Eighth, craving: For pleasant feelings, there is the craving not to be separated from them; for painful feelings, there is the craving to be separated from them; or for neutral feelings, there is any kind of craving. These are the three types of craving: desire-craving, existence-craving, and non-existence-craving. Ninth, grasping: The attachment that is the intensified form of craving itself. This includes four types of grasping: desire-grasping, view-grasping, ethical conduct-grasping, and self-assertion-grasping. The first is attachment to desirable qualities such as form. The second is attachment to wrong views that are not annihilationist views. The third is attachment to inferior ethics and asceticism. The fourth is the craving that desires and is attached to annihilationist views. Tenth, becoming: The karmic imprints of previous actions, which have been imprinted on consciousness, are nourished by craving and grasping, and become powerful karmas capable of leading to future rebirths. "Becoming" is the application of the name of the result to the cause. This includes the three types of karma of the three realms. Eleventh, birth: Through the power of the karma of becoming, the first connection of consciousness in any of the four modes of birth. This includes the four types of birth, such as womb-birth, or the three types of connection of the three realms. Here, birth refers to the five aggregates at the initial moment of connection. Some consider birth to be the emergence from the womb into the external world, but here it is considered to be the initial part of the connection. Twelfth, aging and death: Aging is the ripening and transformation of the aggregates.

is a limb, and death is the abandonment or relinquishment of aggregates of the same kind. The reason for placing the two in one limb is that the order of the two is uncertain. Sorrow and lamentation, etc., are not necessarily limbs, but are mentioned incidentally to arouse disgust. Third, there are two divisions: a brief summary and a summary of all aspects of affliction. First, these twelve limbs are summarized by cause and effect, because they are summarized by the two causes and effects of projecting and accomplishing. That is, ignorance, action, and consciousness at the time of cause are the cause of projecting; consciousness at the time of effect, name and form, the six sense bases, contact, and sensation, these five and a half are the result of being projected; craving, grasping, and existence are the cause of accomplishing; and birth and old age are the limbs of the result of being accomplished. What is projected? The time of effect is the five and a half limbs from consciousness to sensation. By what is it projected? By the cause of ignorance, by the action of action. How is it projected? By the manner in which the consciousness at the time of cause is imbued with the karmic imprints of action. The meaning of projecting is that if there are accomplishing factors such as craving, then these results are made capable of being accomplished. By what is it accomplished? By grasping, which is the condition of existence. What is accomplished? Birth and old age and death. How is it accomplished? By the manner in which the karmic imprints of action that action has imbued consciousness with are made capable. Therefore, the projected limb and the accomplished limb here are of the same nature. Second, ignorance, craving, and grasping are the origin of affliction; action and existence and grasping are the origin of action; and the seven, such as consciousness at the time of effect, are included in the truth of suffering. The fourth function is that ignorance obscures reality, action plants the seeds of future rebirth, consciousness leads to the place of birth, name and form hold the body, the six sense bases complete the body, contact experiences the changes of objects, sensation experiences the ripening, craving again accumulates aggregates, grasping combines the accomplishment of aggregates, existence makes the aggregates of the future manifest, and birth and old age and death each correspond to whomever they are associated with, then that person experiences suffering.
