Space and so on are not established as the cause of annihilation, so there is no annihilation. Then, is the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: soul, spirit) permanent? If so, is the self one with the aggregates or different from them? If the former, then as the aggregates arise and cease, so too would the self. If the latter, then a self other than the aggregates is not established. Moreover, if it is coarse, an indivisible atom, or an indivisible moment, then the self is not established. In short, form is not the self, because it would have to be impermanent. The self does not abide in form, because it would perish involuntarily. It is also not permissible for the self to abide in form by its own nature, because the self cannot take or leave as it pleases. It is also not the case that the self has form by its own nature, because the self does not exist, while external forms and so on exist as visible phenomena. Thus, the teacher Nāgārjuna (Sanskrit: Nāgārjuna, Devanagari: नागार्जुन, Romanization: Nāgārjuna, literal meaning: Dragon Tree) said: "Form is not the self, the self is not connected with form, the self does not abide in form. The self does not abide in form, and so it is with the other four aggregates, one should also understand emptiness." Furthermore, the detailed reasons for refutation should be understood elsewhere. Then, is it meaningless to establish this as a vehicle? No, it is not. Because its meaning refers to ascending from higher to higher. Here, relying on the vehicle of gods and humans that maintains the status quo, the vehicles of wrong views and heretics are cut off. Thus, one ascends the ladder of the correct vehicle, free from afflictions. Thus, the speaker of truth said: "Son of good family, I was worried that you would enter the wrong path, so I summarized and explained many views of the aggregates." Because one knows those bad paths, one will not enter them. Moreover, in order to eliminate all the habits or innate tendencies of those views and behaviors in one's own mindstream, it is said to be necessary, connected, and distinct. One should know the cause of the views of the aggregates, one should know the path, one should know the result. Having known them, one should also abandon them, because this is what is taught. Thus, having briefly discussed the tenets of both the vehicle that maintains the status quo and the vehicle of wrong views, the third general topic, the subject matter of the vehicle of the fully enlightened Buddha, is divided into two: how it is superior to the former, and the special

This is the actual differentiation of the characteristics of tenets. First, in general, if speaking from just one aspect, the noble Dharma is inconceivable. But in brief, those who transform their minds with tenets but do not study the three correct trainings and further propagate the cause and effect of self-view are outsiders. Those who transform their minds with tenets, regard the three correct trainings—discipline, concentration, and wisdom—as their own, and uproot the cause and effect of self-view, the root of existence, are insiders. Second, there are also three points: generally explaining the meaning of the word "vehicle," specifically explaining the characteristics of the three wheels of Dharma, and differentiating the tenets of the nine orders. First, there are also: essence, definition, and classification. The first is: like this, it is precisely that which possesses the special Dharma that appropriately connects to the fortune of the three types of individuals, gradually connecting to the states of higher realms and definite goodness. The second is: if derived from the Sanskrit word "yāna," it is "vehicle." It is also used for riding and directions, etc. Therefore, it is through relying on it that one gradually progresses from lower to higher. As it is also said in the Compendium: "That which, when ridden, delivers beings to peace, this vehicle is like a castle, like a great immeasurable palace, it is the supreme vehicle that accomplishes joy, happiness, and bliss."
