Because of fear of distraction, it should be neither too much nor too little. There are three faults in that: one, counting one as two, etc., is excess; two, holding two as one is incomplete; three, mistaking inhalation for exhalation, etc., is confusion, so it should be abandoned. If the mind becomes distracted in the middle, one should start counting again from the beginning until samadhi is attained. The second is following: how long does inhalation or exhalation last? Are these things that pervade the entire body, or do they flow from some part? Without explicitly intending, follow the inhalation and exhalation. When it enters, follow it sequentially as it enters the nostrils, heart, navel, waist, thighs, and buttocks, until between the two feet. When it exhales, it exhales to the distance of a span or a cubit. Others say, between the mandala of wind and the scattering wind. This is said because it is not in accordance with truly focusing the mind. The third is abiding: like a string of jewels, visualize it abiding from the tip of the nose to the toes, and contemplate whether this is beneficial to me? Is it harmful? Is it cold or hot? The fourth is close observation: these are not merely wind, but also the four great elements, and the form that is manifested by the four great elements, and the feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousness that depend on them, thus closely observing the five aggregates. The fifth is transforming: with wind as the object, transform the mind, from higher to higher, correctly combining the roots of virtue with the Dharma. Complete purification is entering the path of seeing, etc. Others say that transforming is from abiding in mindfulness to vajra-like samadhi, and the sixth, complete purification, is the knowledge of exhaustion, etc. This is said following the view of Master Vasubandhu. That is, in the Sutra of the Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha, it says: If one cannot truly know the coming and going of breath by the power of mindfulness, then how can one truly

Counting 1 and, following 2 and, tranquility 3 and, insight 4 and, entering 5 and, complete purification 6 are contemplated. Among them, counting 1 can divide the activities of action into two types, becoming a support, able to subdue both discrimination and observation, and able to hold the characteristic of the breath moving in and out. Following can also divide the activities of action into two types, relying on true arising, being free from discrimination, and becoming skilled in the characteristic of entering of the breath moving in and out. Tranquility 2 can also divide the activities of action into two types, manifesting the decrease of the breath moving in and out, and being able to abide in the peak of samadhi. Insight can also divide the activities of action into two types, manifesting the cessation of the breath moving in and out, and the individual contemplation of mind and mental factors abiding. Entering can also divide the activities of action into two types, being skilled in the yoga of abandoning the aggregates of grasping, and the yoga of entering the noble ground. Complete purification can also divide the activities of action into two types, abandoning all afflictions and completely purifying views. Thus it is said. Regarding this, it is said in the scriptures, how is it? The mind that is said to be extremely difficult to tame is not observed separately from the wind, therefore, what is called mind is referred to as wind. By all means. Secondly, the antidote to desire is to contemplate a skeleton, because it is said, "For all those who are attached to skeletons." How is it? "Bones up to the ocean, expanding and contracting is the first action. From the foot bones to half the skull, letting go is said to be purification done. Holding the mind between the eyebrows, the contemplation is complete." Such is the order as it is said. Furthermore, children are mostly attached to colors, shapes, soft touch, and reverence. As an antidote to these, contemplating bluish, red, and rotten colors, as well as contemplating pus, being eaten, and
