It is established by refuting and explaining in accordance with the Dharma. The way the Sarvāstivādins take the upavāsa vows from a bhikṣu: According to the Sarvāstivāda school, in the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it is summarized as the upāsaka vow among the seven classes of Prātimokṣa vows and explained, and it is said that the one who has the vows for one day and night but does not have the vows for the rest of his life is an intermediate person, and it is said to be the eighth of the eight upavāsa vows. Among these three, according to the former and the latter, in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, it is said that the five, such as bhikṣus, are the Sangha, and the remaining three are individuals, so it is established that they are taken from a bhikṣu. Rigral said that the Anāthapiṇḍada offered the upavāsa vows, which is said in the Vinaya, but it does not appear there. It is said in the Karmashataka, but that is only referring to the intermediate person, or because it is the view of the Sautrāntika school, it is not universal. The ritual of the upavāsa vows according to the Vinaya school is: In general, only the ritual with eight branches also appears in the treatises of the logicians, as explained in the Extensive Play Sutra. Specifically, according to the view of the Śrāvakayāna Sarvāstivādins, with refuge as the preliminary, promising to be a householder, thereby having eight vows, are the rituals of performing the Uposatha, etc. Among them, the rituals are clearly explained in the Commentary, the property of the seat, the eight vows, and the questions asked by the wandering ascetic Senering. However, both the Sarvāstivādins and the Sautrāntikas, except for the difference in the object of taking and the basis, there is no difference in the actual ritual. Therefore, although the ritual is not clearly explained in the Vinaya, it is said that it can be added to the ritual mentioned in the Sutra, so it can be adopted. If the Sautrāntika school wants to take the vows, then what is the ritual for taking them? When Venerable Atiśa was residing in Ngari (Ngari, now Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China), he gave such a ritual and said that it was the view of the Sautrāntika school, and later Zhangzhung Gyalwa Sherab wrote it as a practical method of the Vinaya. Therefore, according to this school's view, first taking it from the preceptor, merely remembering the previous intention of abandoning, then whenever one wants, taking it in front of the basis, and taking it when one wants to fully protect it for one day and night. From the view of the Sarvāstivādins, it is actually known that it must be taken from others. In particular, even if one has eaten food, it is permissible to take the vows, the noble kindness.

The answer states that there is a difference in that it is not necessary to take the complete day. It is absolutely not permissible to take the vows with one fasting ritual performed continuously for three days, etc. In short, there is one way to bestow the Gomi vows, and two ways to practice taking them as one wishes, the latter being composed by the Holy One (Nagarjuna), etc. According to the Vaibhashika school, in the sutra inquired by the wandering Senaring, one takes the eight-branch vows for as long as one lives, and this is called the Gomi vow. It is clear that this ritual, which promises to be one day, is the Vaibhashika's own discipline. Therefore, among the three vows, according to the Sautrantika school as it is known in Tibet, one does not need to give up at the end of the day, no matter when one wants to take them, because the vow has been completed. From this, it is not a complete negation, nor is it to assume that the view known as the Sautrantika school is a comprehensive acceptance of the Sautrantika school's view. To this, someone says: The eight vows and the complete ritual mentioned in the Donzhag Sutra cannot be accepted by lay practitioners or lower, because while abiding in the vows that last for life, there is no need to take the vows for one day, and it will destroy the previous vows. Therefore, having promised to be a fasting person, one does not even need to explain the ritual by merely protecting the remaining precepts, and one will abide in the Uposatha. This is not reasonable. In the ritual of the Donzhag Sutra, it says "Bhikkhu father," etc., and below that Dharani, it says, "This must also be taken for the side of the ordained, because it is to benefit all sentient beings," etc., because this is the Mahayana's doctrine. This contradicts what the Venerable One (Tsongkhapa) said. If it is said that it will destroy the vows, then the vows of the householder's Uposatha and fasting, in the case of counting in four categories, in the case of the non-dual category, such as the example of a fully ordained layperson taking a one-day Uposatha, it will also be destroyed. What is said in the root sutra is that abiding in a superior basis, but promising an inferior one, this refers to the case where the previous vows have been destroyed, so it is not contradictory. This is similar to what is explained in the Abhisamayalankara as collecting the definitive, and in the three lower tantras, it is explained as the preliminary of the visualization ritual.
