Emptiness is the term for something nominally designated as formless. As said by the great Madhyamika master Vasubandhu. Regarding emptiness, on one sheet, lines one and two: There is no Bodhisattva. Those who take such texts literally and think that everything is inherently empty have views like those of outsiders. In the Five Hundred Prajñāpāramitā, it says: Subhuti, whatever the Blessed One has taught as form being without inherent nature, without arising, without ceasing, peaceful from the beginning, and naturally completely beyond sorrow, all those teachings are not of hidden meaning; they should be understood literally. If one speaks thus, even as an outsider, one abides in the position of individual outsiders, which is a wrong view. I say this. And so forth, because it is extensively taught in the scriptures. Therefore, viewing everything as a mere negation of inherent existence is an extreme, and should be abandoned. Regarding the Hearer Vehicle, in line six: Form is not in feeling and is not visible. And so forth, the Madhyamika says: If one searches for self-nature and other-nature, all phenomena are shown to be invisible. On sheet five, line three: The so-called Bodhisattva is merely a name. This is because, in the ultimate nature of emptiness, a Bodhisattva can be nominally designated as such in conventional truth. Therefore, the name 'Bodhisattva' is temporarily assigned. 'Temporary' means it is not inherently existent. This is its meaning. As said by the great Madhyamika master Vasubandhu. 'Form' and so forth, show that all nominally designated phenomena are merely names. In line two, 'not consciousness' and so forth, show that the form of suchness and names are different. The name 'form' that is nominally designated is not ultimate form. This is its meaning. As said by the great Madhyamika master Vasubandhu. Why is that? In half a line, 'because it is not a name,' shows the reason why name and emptiness are different. The nominally designated name is not the name of

Emptiness by its very nature, whatever that emptiness is, is not the nature of name. This is the term. The Madhyamikas say. For example, in the third half-line, since there is no name, and the ultimate dharmas exist, those dharmas are not the nature of name. Therefore, the ultimate Bodhisattva is also not the nature of name. Therefore, in order to show that the term Bodhisattva is suddenly established, the great Madhyamika master Vasubandhu said. Therefore, for example, in the second line, both are non-existent and invisible. That is to say, generosity paramita and so on are also imputed, and name is also imputed. Therefore, it does not abide in generosity paramita, and name does not abide in generosity paramita. Both are like illusions, because there is no entity. The Madhyamikas say this. The master Dignāga said, 'It prevents all discriminations of sentences such as non-existence.' This also refers to this kind of situation. In the twenty-third line, how can one expect it to be manifested? And so on, because I and the dharmas such as form, are completely non-existent and not existent, how can one expect manifestation and arising? Therefore, it is shown that all dharmas are the nature of being manifested as completely non-existent. Manifestation is non-existent, non-existent, which refers to emptiness. The great Madhyamika said. Until between the seers, when two lines are cut off on two sheets of paper, there is no nature arising from aggregation. Because it arises from aggregation, it is called arising from aggregation, that is, arising from the collection of causes and conditions, this is the term. The Madhyamikas say. Sharadvatiputra said, in one sheet of paper and the sixth line, all dharmas are impermanent. Impermanent means, whatever does not exist constantly. Whatever does not exist at any time is called impermanent. The Madhyamikas say. It is not separated from anything. In one sheet of paper and the seventh line, there is no entity and exhaustion. For the sound called impermanence, it is not without entity and
