For the true, there is no manifest fabrication. The ground of truth is the Dharmakāya of the Tathāgata. The unconditioned is called complete nirvāṇa. Thus and so forth it is said. Furthermore, it is also said that to listen to these ultimate, uncommon, profound, and excellent sūtras, the vessel of the disciple must be completely pure. In the Great Drum Sūtra: Ānanda, this sūtra is extremely difficult to find. Ānanda, this great drum is like finding an udumbara flower in the world. Asked: Bhagavan, what is this? Is this not the Dharma-nature of all Buddhas, the Bhagavat? The Bhagavat replied: This is the Dharma-nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present. Thus it is said. Ānanda, this is profound and difficult to understand, difficult to believe and have faith in, it is the secret of the Buddha. Thus it is said. Ānanda, therefore, this sūtra called the Great Drum, even you, Ānanda, do not understand it. Why is that? Ānanda, those of the Śrāvakayāna and Pratyekabuddhayāna will not believe in this Dharma-door sūtra. Thus it is said. He said: Kāśyapa, those sentient beings who are not like empty husks will listen to this sūtra called the Great Drum. Thus it is said. He said: Kāśyapa, although this entire assembly does not uphold the precepts and is not endowed with discipline, are they skilled in the words of the intention? Asked: Bhagavan, what is meant by the words of the intention? He said: Kāśyapa, the words of the intention are: the Tathāgata is completely extinguished, from now on the Tathāgata is eternal, stable, peaceful, real, and even though completely extinguished, will not decay, this is called the words of the intention. Kāśyapa, for inconsistent sūtras, this light needs to be understood with hundreds of thousands of reasons and causes for the causes and grounds of hell beings. Kāśyapa, therefore, you should temporarily understand this assembly! Thus it is said. Then, those sentient beings who are not of great capacity, belonging to the Śrāvakayāna and Pratyekabuddhayāna,

Those bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Mahayana will also think, 'We believe that even after the Blessed One, the Arhat, the Fully Enlightened Buddha has completely passed into nirvana, I am permanent, stable, peaceful, and constant.' Those who proclaim this are unable to understand. They will abandon this view. Why? Because they have long held the view of emptiness, a view that harms (the Tathagatagarbha), and they are accustomed to practicing this view. Therefore, beings of inferior mind will be afraid upon hearing these pure sutras. From various directions, those of the Hearer Vehicle, the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle, and those newly entered into the Bodhisattva Vehicle, whoever gathers together, one-tenth, one-hundredth, one-thousandth, one hundred-thousandth, one millionth, even an immeasurable fraction of them will gather together.' Furthermore, what are the great bodhisattvas like? They all desire the Dharma of the Tathagata. They all hold the sutras of the Tathagatagarbha, they all proclaim the benefit of the Tathagatagarbha. They all desire the permanence of the Buddha. They are all skilled in the language of hidden meaning. They all proclaim the sutras of definitive meaning, and are able to endure. They are all engaged in restraining and helping those who violate the precepts. They are extremely respectful of the Tathagata. They have great faith in the Mahayana. They do not despise the Hearer Vehicle and the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle. They abandon such a great treasure of sutras, and do not proclaim other sutras. They have the wisdom to know that the Buddha is permanent, and possesses the Tathagatagarbha. Furthermore, they proclaim and do not abandon, they are steadfast, they do not consider emptiness to be emptiness based on the view of the aggregates, but rather consider all conditioned phenomena to be empty by nature, they desire the constant and supreme basis. They abide in such qualities, and the remaining qualities are inconceivable. Kashyapa, therefore you should observe again and again.' Then, the Venerable Mahakashyapa observed again and again.

After careful examination and removal, the remaining retinue became like people who are like husks. Again, after repeated requests, they all became people who were not like husks. Thus it was said. Kasyapa, those among them who are one in a hundred thousand are these virtuous retinue without reservations. Kasyapa, I also ask you, for the sake of the retinue, to proclaim the Great Drum Sutra, which is the vast single vehicle, the Great Vehicle Dharma that is difficult to believe. Kasyapa, you should also ask the retinue in this way again and again. "Lord, so be it," he reported. Then, the great Kasyapa rose from his seat, draped his robe over his left shoulder, knelt on his right knee, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, rose, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and said to the many retinue: "Wise ones, is it appropriate to listen to the Great Drum Sutra? The Tathagata's single vehicle, which is the Great Vehicle, is beyond the realm of all Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and it will be proclaimed to you." Thus, the venerable great Kasyapa repeatedly urged, and they said: "Venerable Kasyapa, we have come to listen to the Dharma, please listen, Venerable Kasyapa. The Tathagata, with compassion, has taken us in, please proclaim this great Sutra well." The great Kasyapa said: "How can one believe?" They said: "Venerable Kasyapa, for example, a man who is born and twenty years old has a son who is a hundred years old. If the Tathagata speaks thus, we will also believe it. Venerable Kasyapa, what need is there to mention listening to the true Dharma? Why is that? Because the Tathagata speaks as he acts, the Tathagata has all eyes, the Tathagata sees with the Buddha's eye. Venerable Kasyapa, furthermore, we
