The departed knew it. He said: "Wise ones, you are the ones who are suitable to listen to, read, hold, and teach the Great Drum Sutra." Thus he spoke. Furthermore, regarding the purification of the taints of the Tathagatagarbha through the three wheels, as explained in that text, in the Sutra on the Great Compassion of the Tathagata: "Son of good family, for example, a skilled gem cutter who knows well how to purify gems, takes an impure gem from the category of precious gems, soaks it in diluted salt water, and thoroughly cleanses it with a hair brush. He does not abandon his effort with just that, but then soaks it in diluted food juice and thoroughly cleanses it with a woolen cloth. He does not abandon his effort with just that, but then soaks it in the juice of great medicine and thoroughly cleanses it with thin gauze. Having been thoroughly cleansed and freed from taints, it is called a great kind of lapis lazuli. Son of good family, similarly, the Tathagata also knows the realm of sentient beings that is not completely pure, and with words that cause aversion to impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity, he causes sentient beings who are attached to samsara to develop aversion, and introduces them to the Vinaya of the noble ones. The Tathagata does not abandon his effort with just that, but then, with words of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, he causes them to realize the nature of the Tathagata. The Tathagata does not abandon his effort with just that, but then, with words of the irreversible wheel of Dharma, with words of the complete purification of the three wheels, he causes those sentient beings with various kinds of inherent nature to enter the realm of the Tathagata. Once they have entered and realized the Dharma nature of the Tathagata, it is called the unsurpassed place of merit." Thus he spoke. Regarding which of the three wheels is provisional and which is definitive, and the differences such as whether they are well distinguished and clearly shown, etc., in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, then, the Blessed One to

I, the Bodhisattva, the true and upright noble one, requested thus: "Bhagavan, at first, in Varanasi, in the Deer Park at the hermitage of the Rishis, for those who have rightly entered the Hearer Vehicle, by thoroughly explaining the Four Noble Truths, you turned the wondrous and amazing Wheel of Dharma, which had never been turned in the world in accordance with the Dharma by anyone, whether they had previously been gods or humans. The Wheel of Dharma turned by the Bhagavan was supreme, circumstantial, of provisional meaning, and a place for the basis of disputes. The Bhagavan, starting from the very non-self-nature of all phenomena, from the very absence of arising and the very absence of ceasing, from endurance up to pacification, and from the very nature of complete nirvana, for those who have rightly entered the Great Vehicle, by means of speaking of emptiness, turned the second Wheel of Dharma, which was wondrous and amazing. The Wheel of Dharma turned by the Bhagavan was also supreme, circumstantial, of provisional meaning, and a place for the basis of disputes. The Bhagavan, starting from the very non-self-nature of all phenomena, from the very absence of arising and the very absence of ceasing, from the very endurance up to the very pacification, and from the very nature of complete nirvana, for those who have rightly entered all vehicles, with excellent and thorough distinctions, turned the third Wheel of Dharma, which was extremely wondrous and amazing. This Wheel of Dharma turned by the Bhagavan is unsurpassed, uncircumstantial, of definitive meaning, and not a place for the basis of disputes. Bhagavan, starting from the very non-self-nature of all phenomena, up to the very nature of complete nirvana, Bhagavan, this explanation of definitive meaning, whatever son or daughter of good family hears and believes, writes down, and having written it down, holds it, recites it, makes offerings to it, applies it correctly, receives its transmission, recites it, and cultivates it with the aspect of a Bodhisattva, with thought, and with meditation, how much merit will that be?"

It has become the cause of increase. After praying in this way, the Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Truthful and Righteous Victorious One: Truthful and Righteous Victorious One, a son or daughter of good family will generate immeasurable and countless merits. Although it is impossible to make an analogy, I will explain it to you in brief. Truthful and Righteous Victorious One, for example, the dust on the tip of a fingernail, compared to the dust on the earth, is not even close to one percent, not even one thousandth, one millionth, number, part, count, example, or cause. The water in a cow's hoofprint, compared to the water in the four great oceans, is not even close from one percent to the cause. Truthful and Righteous Victorious One, similarly, the merit I have spoken of from believing in the sutras that need interpretation to engaging in meditation, compared to the merit achieved from believing in the manifestation of ultimate meaning to engaging in meditation, is not even close to one percent, not even to the cause. Furthermore, in the "Five Hundred Prajñāpāramitā Sutra," it is also said: Subhuti, all the teachings that the Bhagavan has taught, such as form being without inherent existence, without arising, without ceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally in complete nirvana, are not hidden intentions, but should be understood literally. If one speaks in this way, it is even worse than an outsider, being in the position of an ordinary person, and is a wrong view. That is what I say. And so on, because these things are spoken of extensively. Therefore, viewing everything as self-empty and nihilistic is the worst, so it must be abandoned, as stated in the sutra. In the fifty-ninth chapter of the "Middle Length Mother Sutra," Subhuti reports: Bhagavan, I have no doubt or hesitation about these dharmas. However, when the Bhagavan has not yet appeared, monks of the Hearer Vehicle, or the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, or those of the Bodhisattva Vehicle will say this, if
