Someone might say, 'Since there is no negator, what is this negation?' Because you admit that there are no valid cognitions (pramana) and objects of valid cognition (prameya), and then you try to negate negation from the outside, then when you initially admit that there are no valid cognitions and objects of valid cognition, the debate is already over. 2-241 If someone asks, 'If there is no negator, there is no such thing as negation,' the answer is no. This is to dispel an unestablished imputation. For example, for water that is not very deep, if someone thinks it is deep and becomes frightened, then in order to dispel his fear, another person, by knowing the situation, will say, 'This water is not deep.' This is like clarifying someone's idea of something that does not exist, so even if there is no object to be negated, merely stating the act of negation itself is a negation. Furthermore, if you admit a similar fault, then merely admitting a similar fault itself ends the debate.' After admitting this, it should be said like this. Someone says, 'Direct perception (pratyaksha) and so on do not exist.' How is this known? Because in order to understand correctly. By focusing on the object of direct perception, the understanding of the nature of action and non-action can be correctly understood. The rest are the same. Therefore, valid cognitions and objects of valid cognition exist.' It should be answered, 'Even if direct perception and so on are established, the object of valid cognition is unreasonable.' If you admit this, it should be said like this: 2-242 'If valid cognitions such as direct perception are established, then please say, what are the other objects of valid cognition?' Because the pot itself is direct perception, not the attribute of the pot. The object that is completely related to the sense is direct perception. The sense of the eye is called the sense, and the object that is completely related to it is direct perception, and it depends on conditions such as appearance. Therefore, if the pot and so on are completely direct perception, then what is this valid cognition about? What is the other object that becomes the object of valid cognition? Similarly, from the relationship between fire and smoke, one can infer inference (anumana) that is preceded by direct perception. When the knowledge of inference arises, what does it infer? What is the other object that is the object of inference? The rest are the same. Someone says, 'The consciousness of the pot is the valid cognition, and the pot is the object of valid cognition.' It should be answered, 'Because it itself is a condition, it is neither knowledge nor the knowable.' 2-243 Because when the sense meets the object... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because the vase becomes the condition for wanting to generate cognition of the vase, therefore cognition is pramana (means of knowing), and the vase is not prameya (object of knowledge). Even if it is prameya, cognition is not pramana, because it has been clearly expressed that it is prameya. Why do you say that cognition is prameya? Because you say: 'Self, body, senses, objects, cognition, mind, actions, faults, future life, results, suffering, and liberation are all prameya.' Therefore, neither exists. Doubt Someone says: 'Whatever is pramana is also prameya,' this is a doubt. Because there is doubt, both pramana and prameya can be established. The meaning of the word 'doubt' is existence. If someone says, regarding something unreal, 'Does this exist?', then it should be answered: There is no doubt about things that can be cognized or cannot be cognized, because they either exist or do not exist. Here, is doubt generated about things that can be cognized, things that cannot be cognized, or things that are being cognized? One should not doubt things that can be cognized, nor should one doubt things that cannot be cognized, and there is no third thing that is 'being cognized.' Therefore, doubt does not exist. Someone says: 'Doubt does not exist because it does not depend on distinctions. For example, seeing a stump or a person from a distance, then doubting 'Is this a person?' or 'Is this a stump?' When seeing distinctions such as a bird's nest or the disturbance of animals, one will determine 'This is a stump.' Conversely, if one sees actions such as the head moving or the hand waving, the cognition 'This is a person' will arise. This still depends on the distinction between existence and non-existence, otherwise doubt will arise. Therefore, doubt exists.' If someone says this, then it should be answered: Because it has been refuted before, doubt does not depend on distinctions. 'Because of existence and non-existence, there is no doubt,' this itself is a refutation. For example, because of observing reasons such as a bird's nest on a stump, the cognition 'This is a stump' arises. This is not doubt, because it is a complete understanding as it is. Similarly, if you see... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
