If a lamp could illuminate without relying on anything, would it, merely by existing here, dispel or illuminate the darkness within all the caves of all the mountains? Such a thing has never been seen in the world, nor is it desired. In treatises, the behavior of worldly people (jig rten pa) is considered equivalent to that of lions, etc. Here, 'worldly people' refers to all kinds of people from children to cowherds. 'Actors' refers to Vishnu (Khyab 'jug), Ishvara (dBang phyug), Brahma (Tshangs pa), Kapila (Ser skye), owls, extenders, dwellers, birds, the wealthy, Gagara, Mathara, etc. Whatever principle they agree with is the best example. Vishnu, etc., consider the absence of light to be darkness. Why? Because they say, 'The absence of light is darkness.' Here, darkness means the absence of light. Therefore, for other researchers, what kind of thing is so-called 'darkness'? Actually, it is nothing. So, the statement that a lamp dispels darkness is not valid. Therefore, the metaphor 'a lamp dispels darkness' is inappropriate. Because this metaphor is inappropriate, the 'pramana' (tshad ma, प्रमाण, means of cognition) as the object of the metaphor is also not valid. Therefore, there is no 'pramana' that proves itself and others. Furthermore, a lamp cannot illuminate itself because there is no darkness. A lamp cannot illuminate itself. If there is no darkness in the lamp, what can it illuminate? A lamp and light are the same thing. Because there is a contradiction, there is no darkness. Furthermore, because it leads to inversion, darkness will also obscure itself. If a lamp can illuminate itself and others, what kind of example can it be? Because of inversion, darkness will also obscure itself. If darkness obscures itself, then darkness cannot be seen. Who should it be said to? Because the lamp itself promises to illuminate itself and others, the word 'if' is assumed. If darkness only obscures itself, then the lamp cannot illuminate it. Furthermore, 'pramana' and 'the measurable' are not established in the three times (past, present, and future). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is the measuring consciousness (Tshad ma, Skt: pramāṇa, the instrument for measuring the truth of cognition) prior to, subsequent to, or simultaneous with the object to be measured (gzhal bya, Skt: prameya, the object being measured)? If the measuring consciousness is prior to the object to be measured, then by what is it said to be a measuring consciousness? When the object to be measured does not exist, what can become a measuring consciousness, and what does the measuring consciousness ascertain? If it is subsequent, then with the object to be measured existing, what becomes a measuring consciousness? That which is unborn is not suitable as a measuring consciousness for that which is born, because mountains and so forth would also become measuring consciousnesses, and also because the unborn and the born do not exist simultaneously. If it is simultaneous, that is also not possible, just as the horns of a cow grow simultaneously and cannot be cause and effect. Reply: Since measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are not established in the three times (past, present, future), refutation (འགག་པ་, 'gag pa, negation or rebuttal) is not reasonable. Since you assert that the object to be measured is not established in the three times, is the refutation of measuring consciousness and the object to be measured that you speak of prior to, subsequent to, or simultaneous with the thing to be refuted? The refutation is also not established in the three times, because there is nothing to be refuted. How then can your words refute, and how is the refutation established? If the refutation is established, then in the examination of the three times, if the sameness is established, it must be said that measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are not different. If the object of refutation and the act of refuting are not established in the three times, then the refutation is also not established. If you say that the refutation is established, and measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are also established, that is not correct, because it has been previously admitted. If measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are established by refutation through the examination of the three times, that statement is not correct, because it has been previously admitted. Previously, you yourself admitted that measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are not established in the three times. Now, seeing this fault, you think that it will destroy everything, so you say that the refutation is also not established. This is not said after a thorough examination. If it is admitted that measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are not established, then the dispute is concluded at the same time as the admission and denial. For example, when the gods are completely satisfied and delighted, at what time do you say that measuring consciousness and the object to be measured are not established in the three times, so that the refutation and the words of refutation are also not established? At that time, in order to eliminate your own fault, haven't you already admitted that measuring consciousness and the object to be measured do not exist?
