The Root Teachings of the Six Great Volumes Ztsa23, 'Detailed Analysis' 'Detailed Analysis' Pramana (Epistemology) Sanskrit: Vaidalyanama-prakarana Tibetan: 'Detailed Analysis' Homage to Manjushri Kumara! To dispel the arrogance of those Who, through knowledge of logic, become arrogant, And desire to engage in debate, I shall explain 'Detailed Analysis'. All other debaters here must undoubtedly acknowledge and establish the categories of pramana ( प्रमाण, प्रमाण, cognition tool), prameya ( प्रमेय, प्रमेय, cognizable object), vicikitsa ( विचिकित्सा, विचिकित्सा, doubt), prayojana ( प्रयोजन, प्रयोजन, purpose), drishtanta ( दृष्टान्त, दृष्टान्त, example), siddhanta ( सिद्धान्त, सिद्धान्त, established conclusion), avayava ( अवयव, अवयव, members of inference), tarka ( तर्क, तर्क, reasoning), nirnaya ( निर्णय, निर्णय, ascertainment), vada ( वाद, वाद, discussion), jalpa ( जल्प, जल्प, wrangling), vitanda ( वितण्डा, वितण्डा, cavilling), hetvabhasa ( हेत्वाभास, हेत्वाभास, fallacy), chala ( छल, छल, quibbling), nigrahasthana ( निग्रहस्थान, निग्रहस्थान, point of defeat), and grounds for censure before engaging in debate. However, those who propound emptiness do not acknowledge the meaning of pramana and so forth because they have no attachment. It should be stated that pramana and prameya are intertwined. Here, we see that pramana and prameya are intertwined, for if there is prameya, it becomes pramana; and if there is pramana, then prameya becomes prameya. Thus, through prameya, pramana is established, and through pramana, prameya is established, Pramana becomes the pramana of prameya, and prameya becomes the pramana of pramana, because they attain their nature in dependence upon each other, therefore pramana becomes both, and prameya becomes both, and thus they are intertwined. Therefore, they are not established by themselves. If pramana and prameya were established by their own nature, then they would become pramana and prameya. Because things that are established in dependence have the meaning of producing each other, therefore they are not established by themselves. Furthermore, neither existence nor non-existence are dependent. If they were to be established as dependent, then what would be the difference between existence and non-existence? Regarding this, first, existence is not dependent because of its very existence; for example, an existing pot does not depend on other clay and so forth. Regarding non-existence, non-existence is also not dependent because things like rabbit horns should not be dependent. Because there are two faults, neither is dependent. Prameya (Object of Knowledge) Someone says: Just as without scales and other instruments, the object to be measured cannot be grasped, so too, without pramana, the object to be known cannot be grasped. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone says, 'There is no end,' then it should be answered thus: It is not so, because it would lead to an infinite regress. If one asserts that because there is no pramāṇa ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge), the object to be known is not established, then how do they assert that pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) are established by the absence of pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge)? One must state the specific reason or difference. If someone further says that all things are established by pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge), then it would follow that pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) are established by other pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge), because pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) are included within all things. If pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) are not established by pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge), then the vow that 'all things are to be proven by pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge)' is broken. Someone says: Pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) do not need other pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge), because here, like a lamp, a pramāṇa ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) serves to establish itself and others. Just as we see that a lamp illuminates itself and others, so too do pramāṇas ( प्रमाण,means of knowledge) establish themselves and others. Therefore, the fault of infinite regress and the problem of the lamp, etc., do not exist. It should be answered thus: A lamp does not illuminate whether it encounters darkness or not. Does a lamp illuminate after encountering darkness, or does it illuminate even without encountering it? Firstly, a lamp cannot illuminate after encountering darkness, because there is no encounter. Because there is no encounter between a lamp and darkness, as they are contradictory. Where there is a lamp, there is no darkness, so how can this lamp dispel darkness or illuminate? If it does not encounter, it is like an unsheathed sword that does not cut. If someone says that this is like the harm of a graha ( ग्रह,planet), it is not so, because it contradicts the example. The harm caused by a graha ( ग्रह,planet) to Devadatta ( देवदत्त,name) and others occurs after encountering them, or a graha ( ग्रह,planet) affects its own body, etc., but the harm caused by a lamp to darkness is not like that, so how can it be compared to the harm caused by a graha ( ग्रह,planet)? A graha ( ग्रह,planet) and others have bodies, so they can affect people, etc., while fire, rope, water, disease, snakes, and plagues can only cause harm to things that have bodies, but a lamp does not have any of these characteristics. Therefore, they are not similar. Furthermore, a fire burning far away does not harm the body and senses, etc., of darkness, because they do not exist. Therefore, the example of a graha ( ग्रह,planet) is not applicable to proving things without encountering them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
