They agree that the Teacher considered these to be definitive. To understand how the two forms of the altruistic body (Sanskrit: Parartha-rupa-kaya, the form body manifested for the benefit of others) apply to the meaning of the scriptures, they can be divided into three situations: situations consistent with the world, situations for analyzing terms, and situations for analyzing the ultimate. In the first situation, since the Buddha is directly acknowledged, disciples use terms such as 'seeing the Buddha directly' and 'hearing the Buddha's teachings directly.' In the second situation, even if the Buddha is not actually present but is a manifestation of the disciple's mind, these two forms of the form body do not become separate from the universally existing Buddha, because the Buddha is the self-manifested Trikaya (Sanskrit: Trikaya, Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, Nirmanakaya), as explained in the Ratnagotravibhāga (Treatise on the Buddha-nature). In the third situation, since it is free from disputes about whether or not it is the Buddha, no assertion can be made. Therefore, scriptures such as 'Those who see me in form' also apply to the latter two situations, because the Buddha's self-manifested form body and the Buddha's self-manifested, conceptually free ultimate reality are not visible to disciples. The second question is: Is the samsara (cyclic existence) that appears to ordinary people merely conventional truth? If the answer is yes, then the external ocean would turn into nectar, because gods would see it that way; or into pus and blood, because pretas (hungry ghosts) would see it that way. If the answer is no, then how can the two opposites of samsara and nirvana be distinguished? The answer is: The samsara that appears to ordinary people is merely conventional truth, because without conventional truth as a means, there cannot be ultimate truth as a result. Even so, the external ocean does not turn into nectar or pus and blood, because the statement 'external ocean' is merely based on human convention. In human cognition, nectar and pus and blood do not even exist in conventional truth. When gods and pretas see nectar and pus and blood, they only exist in conventional truth, and other than that, they do not even exist in conventional truth. Therefore, Acharya Chandrakirti said: 'The flowing water is nectar for gods, and pus and blood for pretas.' This is based on human convention and considers the way pretas perceive things. The third question is: It is said that in the Lamdre (Path with Its Result) teachings of the Sakya (one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism) fathers and sons, appearances are considered to be mind. Then, is the Buddha that arises in the disciple's own mind the same as or different from one's own mind? If they are the same, then one's own mind would become the Buddha. If they are different, then it contradicts the statement 'all appearances are mind.' The answer is: As mentioned earlier, in the first of the three situations... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding appearances, we acknowledge them as external realities. Because we do not accept them as existing within our own minds, the fault of our own minds being Buddhas does not arise. In the intermediate stage, we acknowledge appearances as existing in the mind, but because they appear as the self-appearances of those to be tamed, we do not acknowledge them as Buddhas, so the previous fault does not arise. As for the third stage, it is a state free from elaboration. As Sakya Pandita said: 'There are three ways of entering. The Buddha, in accordance with the way of entering that accords with the world, spoke of external objects as real. In accordance with the reasoning that analyzes terminology, he spoke of appearances as mind. In accordance with the ultimate meaning, he said that all phenomena are free from elaboration.' This shows the way to enter the meaning of reality and is a lamp for distinguishing between the definitive and provisional meanings of the scriptures. The fourth question is: 'If it exists, is it universally Hevajra?' Is this in the context of the Buddha or sentient beings? If the former, then impure sentient beings would not be seen by the Buddha. If the latter, then sentient beings would see all knowable objects as pure.' The answer to this is that when purifying the basis of purification, the means of purification, and what is to be purified in the generation stage, it must be acknowledged that 'if it exists, it is universally Hevajra.' However, if generally separating the terminology of the two truths to explain them, then acknowledging this is somewhat difficult. As it says in the 'Praise of Dharmadhatu': 'Just as in the summer season, water is said to be warm. The same water in the cold season is said to be cold. Likewise, when accompanied by afflictions, it is said to be a sentient being. Likewise, when free from afflictions, it is said to be a Buddha.' Therefore, sentient beings and Buddhas must be explained separately. Even so, in the context of the Buddha, 'if it exists, it is universally Hevajra' is universally true, because all knowable objects have been attained as the wisdom of self-appearance. If it is said that 'the Buddha does not see impure sentient beings,' if this means that 'the Buddha does not see impure sentient beings as impure,' then this is what we accept. If it is said that 'the Buddha sees impure sentient beings as pure, therefore the Buddha does not see impure sentient beings,' then this is entirely analogous to how an unappetizing taste appears as the most delicious taste, therefore the unappetizing taste is not seen. The fifth question is: 'According to the Hevajra system, what are the respective objects to be purified by the four empowerments?' Some believe that the physical body of a person who possesses the vows and lineage of mantra is the object to be purified by the vase empowerment. Even if that person's physical body transforms into Hevajra, as soon as he abandons the body, the object to be purified will be abandoned. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
