Homage! Offerings and refuge! You all possess the wisdom of knowing minds, the compassion of love, the activity of deeds, and the inconceivable power of protection. I beseech you to welcome from the front and escort from the back all sentient beings equal to the expanse of the sky, especially this deceased person. Please light the lamp of wisdom in the great darkness of fear. Please turn back the fierce red wind of karma with the force of compassion. Please transform the great precipice into a path of bliss. Please transform all beings of Yama and the bardo into companions of heroes and heroines. May all the fears of sound, light, and rays be recognized as the self-display of self-arisen awareness. May all the deities of the hundred families of peaceful and wrathful ones be shown as protecting deities and goddesses. May you liberate us from the great ocean of suffering in samsara. May you cut off the evil doors of the six realms. May you lead us to the pure realms of the three kayas. Secondly, the history of how the profound path of transference arose: Now, for you, the deceased, I will open the teachings of Padmasambhava among the six dharmas of becoming a Buddha without meditation, the oral instructions for the lazy to be liberated at the time of death, and for the extremely sinful to be forcibly enlightened, the profound path of transference. Now is the time to transfer you to the pure realm of Khechara. Generate a mind of joy and delight, and without distraction, listen well and keep it in mind. As it is said in the tantra of the Union of the Sun and Moon: If the history is not explained with meaning, then there will be the fault of not trusting this great secret teaching. As it is said, in order to make the lineage reliable and to generate certainty in the oral instructions, I will briefly relate the history. In that, the Sutra path vows for three countless eons, while the mantra says that liberation is attained in one lifetime and one body. In the one-lifetime vow of mantra, there are also many such as the wheel of liberation by wearing, the tsakli of liberation by seeing, the mudra of liberation by touching, and the samaya substances of liberation by tasting. Each of them shows extraordinary and rare sacred dharmas, the Bhagavan All-Knowing Manifestation.

as well. Even hearing the names of Buddhas like Akshobhya and Bhaisajyaguru once can eliminate the suffering of falling into lower realms. If the name of Ratnaketu is proclaimed in the ear of a dying person, they will be reborn in the Trayastrimsa heaven. Sorong Khorlo eliminates the fear and suffering of the bardo, and so on. There are many such merits in both new and old mantras. However, among all of these, the most outstanding is the profound path of transference of consciousness (Tib. འཕོ་བ, 'pho ba). Especially for beings who are dying or have passed away, there is no other path more excellent or equal to this profound path. As it says in the Dakini Kuntuzangpo's Tantra: 'When consciousness rides the wind, if it is transferred to the path above, even a person accustomed to sin will be reborn in higher realms many times.' And as it says in the Four Seats Tantra: 'From above the nine apertures, immediately transfer consciousness with the mind. Even one who kills Brahmins daily, commits the five inexpiable sins, and enjoys the fruits of thievery, will be liberated by this path, will not be stained by sin, and will go to the supreme other shore of samsara.' As it is said, liberation and attainment of liberation from the path of great bliss through the upper gate depends entirely on this profound Dharma. Such a profound Dharma teaching, the practice of transference of consciousness, exists in various forms—new and old tantras, Kama, Terma, Dagnang—each profound, vast, rare, and unimaginably wondrous. Now, the story of how the profound path of transference of consciousness known as "Jakzukma" came to be is as follows: In the past, during the time when King Trisong Detsen invited the representative of Shakyamuni Buddha, the master Padmasambhava of Oddiyana, and he was residing in Chimpu at Samye, there was a minister named Nyima who was very skilled in worldly affairs. One night, while he was searching his house with a torch to retrieve some belongings, a fire broke out. One offering site, his parents, and about thirty servants, along with all the livestock and possessions, were completely burned. When the minister was overwhelmed by unbearable suffering, the king...
