When awareness is focused on the appearance of light, it turns back from that appearance, and the outer world and inner beings are seen as water moons and dreams. One's own body appears like a rainbow, without inherent existence, just empty and clear. Although others cannot see it because their eyes are not purified, one sees it oneself, and in that state there is no birth, death, aging, or decay. One can benefit sentient beings with a vajra-like body, like the great teacher father and mother and the great scholar Vimalamitra. If one does not wish to engage in great altruistic activities at that time, one enters the inner space because one has mastery over entering into samadhi. Then, one awakens again from the radiance that dwells in the inner clarity of dharmata, and with the activity of body and wisdom inseparable, one can benefit beings until samsara is empty, like the spontaneously accomplished activities of the three kayas of Shakyamuni Buddha. In other paths and in trekchö, the body dissolves into atoms and the mind dissolves into dharmata, and one is liberated in primordial purity. Dissolving into atoms and appearing in light, and having mastery over both birth and death, is a unique characteristic of tögal alone. Thus, when the measure of the four visions is temporarily attained, the boundaries of each are distinguished, and by seeing the ultimate vision of the exhaustion of phenomena, one becomes a Buddha in the state of no residue. Conversely, if one does not exhaust them in this way, one will not attain the state of no residue. As it says in the tantras: 'When the arising of the body is thus cut off, and the contaminated aggregates do not appear, one attains perfect enlightenment in this life.' And: 'If dharmata is not exhausted, one will not attain the state of no residue.' And so forth. Explanation of the practice of the four supports. Establishing the foundation on the three immovables. Secondly, the explanation of the practice of the four supports. In Klongsal it says: 'The four supports are essential instructions, indispensable behind the former.' Although the essential point of the meaning is not grasped, it is needed behind the former, that is, the four visions. These are: establishing the foundation, measuring, pegging, and the measure of liberation. Among these, the first is establishing the foundation on the three immovables, which means not moving from the three ways of sitting. That is, if the body does not move, the channels do not move; if the channels do not move, the prana does not move; if the prana does not move, the mind does not move; if the mind does not move, the discursive thoughts that agitate cease, and one abides in awareness. Also, one should not move from the way of looking with the eyes. Because the essential point of awareness is the channel, its essential point is the door, and its essential point is the lamp, the channel does not move.

When moving, it is the eye; when not moving, the lamp does not flicker, thus enhancing appearances. The expanse of awareness is inseparable. Wind and mind should be made to be unmoving from non-fabrication, thereby not giving rise to conceptual thoughts, and simultaneous liberation arises. There is a need to master the union of expanse and awareness. As it is said in the Root Tantra: "Have unwavering faith in that. Based on the three immovables, the wind and mind will reach the essential point." So it is said. Measuring with the Three Abidings. Secondly, measuring with the three abidings: When the wind that moves external appearances ceases, the expanse of awareness abides without coming or going. By abiding in this way, the realms reach their measure. When the wind that moves the internal aggregates ceases, the body abides without movement. By abiding in this way, the deluded thoughts of samsara are purified. When the wind that moves secret thoughts ceases, conceptual thoughts abide without flowing. By abiding in this way, the causes of the mind's conceptual movement cease. At that time, there will be two occurrences: measurement shown by dreams, and signs appearing in the three doors. First, measuring by grasping dreams: Those of sharp faculties and great diligence, by their dreams dissolving into the expanse, pure sleep arises as clear light. This is a sign that the connections of karmic imprints have been severed, and in this very life, the light body will be accomplished and Buddhahood will be attained. Those of middling faculties, by knowing in dreams and being accustomed to transformation, will certainly recognize the bardo and be liberated—a sign of that. Those of lesser faculties, the dreams of negative karmic imprints will cease, and they will only dream good dreams—a sign of exhaling into the self-existing nirmanakaya. The signs appearing in the three doors are signs of seeing the direct appearance of dharmata: The body does not remain in activity, the pulse is slow, and it is motionless like a turtle placed in its shell. Speech, because the basis of expression is pure, does not desire to speak, like a mute person. The mind, realizing self-liberation without grasping, abides in absorption, like a dakini entering samadhi. The signs of seeing the experience of increasing realization are that the wind dissolves into the central channel, and there is no conceptual thought of good or bad, so the body, like a person afflicted by illness, does not groom or adorn itself. Speech transcends affirmation and negation, so one speaks nonsensically and spontaneously, like a madman blurting out his own words. The collection of thoughts dissolves in its own place, so the mind, like a person poisoned seven times who knows he will certainly die, does not return to remembrance.
