First, the sequence of instructions on the preliminary practices has two parts: common and uncommon. First, the common preliminaries are: the common vehicle's preliminaries, the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, contemplating impermanence, the law of karma, the suffering of samsara, and contemplating the benefits of liberation, these five, and the common preliminaries of secret mantra, refuge, bodhicitta, the practice and recitation of Vajrasattva, mandala, and guru yoga, these ten. These should all be arranged separately according to the order of taming one's own mind-stream in accordance with other common practices. Alternatively, as it says in the Tantra 'Vast Expanse of Clarity': 'Loving-kindness and compassion are the common path of Dharma, for the sake of entering the Great Vehicle.' And as it says in the 'Meaning Instructions for the Deceased': 'Cultivate impermanence, compassion, and bodhicitta.' Therefore, contemplating impermanence, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment are considered the most important. First, contemplating impermanence, as it says in the noble 'Samadhiraja Sutra': 'When this world realm is destroyed, and all the worlds become empty space, just as it was before, so it will be again. Know that all phenomena are like that.' As it says, the external, stable container world, including Mount Meru, the four continents, the surrounding mountains, and the foundation, will also be burned by seven suns, washed away by water, and destroyed by wind, eventually becoming empty space, so it is certain to be impermanent. Similarly, in the 'Chapter on Categories' it says: 'A king with seven jewels, and other small kings and ministers, monks, brahmins, householders, etc., all these beings are impermanent, like travelers in a dream.' As it says, contemplating the internal, moving sentient beings is also impermanent, unstable, and quickly decaying. Seeing and hearing the deaths of countless enemies, friends, and neutral people, one should also determine that it is impossible to know when one's own death will occur. Moreover, the teacher Hero says: 'Even the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with marks and signs, the vajra body also...'" } ] ============================================================
