Through this virtue of pure intention, may I uproot samsara and the lower realms. May all beings swiftly attain Buddhahood, without remaining in existence. Remembering the meaning of these words, one should diligently strive again and again until a genuine Bodhicitta or a Bodhicitta in accordance with it arises in one's being. The necessity of meditating in this way is: by meditating on the impermanence of life, one's mind turns away from worldly affairs, and whatever one does becomes Dharma. By meditating on loving-kindness, compassion, and Bodhicitta, one's mind turns away from the Lesser Vehicle, and whatever one does becomes for the benefit of others. As it is said in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "Impermanence, compassion, and Bodhicitta, entering the Dharma, go on the path of the Great Vehicle." Thus it is taught. Having thus completed the stages of purifying the mind-stream. The Uncommon Preliminaries. Training in the Yoga of the Four Elements. Secondly, in connection with this, establishing the nature of reality through the uncommon preliminaries. Among these are: training in the yoga of the four elements, distinguishing between samsara and nirvana, purifying the obscurations of body, speech, and mind, and allowing the three doors to rest in their natural state and return to their original position, these four. First, the yoga of the four elements is: as it is said in the root tantra of "Manifestation of the Result": "The stages of training the three bodies, mainly focusing on the qualities of the elements, through training from the sounds of earth, water, fire, and wind, one will definitely achieve." Although it is taught in this way, there are not many lineages that put it into practice, so it is okay not to do it, therefore it is not mentioned here either. Distinguishing Between Samsara and Nirvana. Showing the Distinction. Secondly, distinguishing between outer samsara and nirvana is divided into two: showing the distinction and the manner of distinguishing. First, showing the distinction is: as it is said in "Manifestation of the Result": "If samsara and nirvana are not distinguished, then the three realms of body, speech, and mind will not be able to sever the connection, therefore it is said that samsara and nirvana should be distinguished." This means that the nature of beings' body, speech, and mind is primordially pure by nature, but temporarily obscured by the sudden delusion of appearance and attachment, therefore, from beginningless time, they have been wandering and transmigrating in the realms of the six classes of beings. The physical postures, verbal expressions, mental thoughts, and experiences of suffering of each of the six classes of beings are inconceivable, yet they still cling and are attached to them. What can be done? Therefore, one must distinguish between samsara and nirvana, and from now on, sever the root of birth in samsara.

A decision must be made. It is also said in other tantras: From conceptual thought arises conceptual thought, and existence itself eliminates existence. Just as water enters the ear, it must be drawn out by other water. Similarly, conceptual thoughts about things should also be purified with complete certainty. So it is said. The method of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana. The method of external distinction. General explanation. Secondly, regarding the method of distinguishing, there are also two types, inner and outer. Firstly, the method of external distinction has two aspects, general and specific. Firstly, the general explanation is: As stated in the "Teachings to a Son": In order to reverse the attachment to body, speech, and mind, one must first begin practice. As it is said, in order not to be tainted by the seventh root downfall, one should secretly go to a deserted valley, a dense forest, a mountainside, or other places where there is no human traffic and where one cannot be seen or heard. One should offer a torma to the local deities and request them not to create obstacles to unrestrained behavior. In order to sever all the illusions of samsara arising from karma and conditions, one should externally distinguish between samsara and nirvana. That is, in order to accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings who were once mothers and are equal to space, one should separate the three doors of karmic appearance samsara and nirvana. With the determination that one will never return to samsara, one should engage in various actions of the three doors with such resolve. When the appearance of fatigue arises, one should observe the nature of the after-knowledge of feeling satisfied, and then rest. The method of specific distinction. Secondly, the method of specific distinction is: As stated in the "Aftermath": In order to perform the preliminary practices of the body, one should practice various behaviors of the six realms, and also practice the behaviors of the Three Jewels. In order to perform the preliminary practices of speech, one should utter various sounds of the six realms, and also practice peaceful and wrathful sounds and the sounds of the elements. In order to perform the preliminary practices of the mind, one should take the suffering of the six realms to heart. As it is said, in accordance with this, it is said in the "Ornament of Clear Realization": The body should walk and sit, make various contractions and mandalas, extend and contract limbs, and display various actions. Manifesting with a mindful mind, thinking of the forms and behaviors of the beings of the six realms in the mind, the body should do it. And,
