In the season when spring trees and leaves and flowers are newly born and blooming, the qualities and realizations are also newly born; in the season when autumn fruits ripen and grain essence gathers, the fruits of practice are accomplished and the meaning of the heart essence is easily understood; in winter, when the cold is mild and the temperature is moderate, the body is comfortable and one desires to meditate. There are two times that are good, namely when the sun rises to the top of the mountain in the morning, and when the sun sets in the evening, because at these two times the appearance is clear and the vision is vast. Moreover, it is very important for introduction, and has the benefits of being in key with the times, and the faults of not being in key with the times, etc. As the former said: "Because of the difference in the timing of the introduction, the wise should seek the key to the timing." It also says: "The introduction is established and the experience and vision increase further." It also says: "If the wise do not rely on the key to the timing, then the essence will be interrupted and separated from the growth of experience." The characteristics of the Lama. The characteristics of the Lama to be abandoned. Third, the characteristics of the Lama have two aspects: what should be abandoned and what should be adopted. First, the characteristics to be abandoned are: From the Tantra of the Great Self-Arisen Awareness: "Not knowing but having great pride, foolish and ignorant, following words, not thinking about the meaning of secret mantras, cutting off others with hatred and having arrogant words, entering the wrong path, not seeing the face of the mandala of empowerment, vows broken, unable to answer questions, little learning but great pride, an unexamined teacher is the demon of the student, not a teacher who teaches secret mantras, unable to teach Dzogchen Ati, should not associate with him." This means not understanding the meaning of the words of the Great and Small Vehicles, having great pride in knowing only a little, being foolish and only following words and believing, not being able to distinguish the meaning of secret mantras hidden and concealed in six limits and four modes, having a bad mind and being untamed, speaking words of hatred and arrogance, misunderstanding the meaning and going astray, not having fully seen the common and uncommon mandala of empowerment, having violated, degenerated, broken, and destroyed the samaya and vows, not being able to answer questions as they are, having a small range of learning, and having great self-righteous pride. If one possesses these faults, even if one's lineage and status are high, one is a demon on the path to the right path, so one should abandon them. If one does not abandon them, then all meaning will be ruined, and one will fall into samsara and the lower realms.

It also becomes a cause for (degeneration). As it says in Klongsal: "If a lama without qualities gives empowerment, both will be ruined." As it is said and so on. The qualities of a lama to be relied upon. Secondly, the qualities to be relied upon are: In Ati Kodpa Chenpo it says: "Wise and detached from activities, possessing the meaning of the Dharma nature, having reached the limit, without delusion in the matter of desire, these are the qualities of a secret mantra lama." That is, being learned in all vehicles in general and especially in the Vajrayana, having abandoned activities due to small self-grasping and attachment, delighting in secluded places, being skilled in teaching the meaning of the Dharma nature, having produced heat signs in the practice of generation and completion stages, possessing the measure of liberation in any of the three outer, inner, and secret (liberations), having great wisdom and compassion and being tireless in teaching the Dharma according to the wishes of the disciples to be tamed, and although having excellent qualities, being without pride and arrogance. If one possesses these qualities, even if one's lineage and appearance are inferior, one is a guide on the true path and must be relied upon. By relying on such a Vajra Master, one can quickly attain the state of liberation and omniscience. As it says in Klongsal: "By the empowerment of a lama with qualities, suffering is liberated." So it is said. The qualities of a disciple. The qualities of a disciple to be abandoned. Fourthly, the qualities of a disciple also have two aspects: those to be abandoned and those to be relied upon. Those to be abandoned are: As it says in Rangshar: "A disciple without capacity, with little knowledge, flattering and greatly observant of faces, clever in speech and stingy in action, greatly deceitful, breaking the lama's words and arguing about kindness, not seeing qualities and finding faults, with bad lineage and nature, despising kindness and praising oneself, vows and samayas are corrupted in practice, a teacher who does not examine disciples is an enemy, to a person who does not practice, the empowerment of the Great Perfection, and the meaning and instructions should not be shown." That is, one who is of little wisdom and ungrateful, good at observing faces and flattering, praising in person and slandering behind one's back, clever in speech and stingy in action, greatly false and deceitful, not respecting the lama's words and not listening to instructions, not seeing qualities and finding faults, returning harm for kindness, delighting in slander and discord, praising oneself and arguing about one's deeds, with strong anger and jealousy, not abiding by vows and samayas and whose practice and conduct are corrupted, with bad lineage and behavior, despis
